An Ode to Turkeys
By Dane Smith-Johnsen
I
There was a time, year one thousand A.D
U.S. turkeys faced a brand new plight.
Usefulness seen.
Native American's hunting delight.
The white meat of a turkey is quite lean.
So much healthier than man knew before,
Nothing one ever could say,
In any way,
Would make Americans free turkeys anymore.
II
Thanksgiving comes and goes.
Wild turkey gobbling slows.
Ben Franklin watched their plight.
Nominated, though laughter did flare.
Turkeys beneath the moonlight
Were beautiful out there.
Ben suggested, turks as the nation's bird.
But eagles know, it was not so.
And turks in history endured this nations birth.
III
Although wild turkeys can run fast and fly,
Toms might in spring be found.
Fluffing, dancing around.
Caruncle and waddle shiny, bright red
Courting the hens, showing off, prancing, not dead.
Although turkeys fly strong,
The hunters by day kept watch in the fields.
Until, Old Tom, no more sang passion's song
And hens under bushes sat on eggs long.
When chicks hatched out and played their mother shields.
But on Thanksgiving Day...
Run away!

devouring the luscious fowl
trimmed with great harvest

Thanksgiving Eve
Hate the holidays well I got one for you.
Dont have to follow no rules.
Just drink till ya drop.
To what's the ocassion still ya
havent a clue.
Hey there missy.
dont piss and moan just grab a pint
ya big sissy.
No need for a kleenex just wipe that blood off
on your sleeve.
Stoner slacker and poets unite for
it's Thanksgiving Eve.
No need to hang anything by the
chimney with care.
But it is a party so lets see your underwear.
Lets beat the holiday blues.
Hey who's drunk and horney?
Short skirts and thoose high heel shoes.
Crank that jukebox hey grandpa theres
no need to leave.
Cause everyone is included on Thanksgiving eve.
Hey amigo if we play are cards right.
we can stir enough stuff to see a chick fight.
Hey whats going on upstairs God only knows.
It's not cheating just wrestling without any
clothes.
Hey who just cut a whole in the floor?
hey grandpa ya better watch that exotic woman
your dancing with.
Cause she's a woman with a little more.
Hey ya'll the cops are coming along with a swat
team so it's my cue to leave.
but like that fat prick in a red suit I'll
return to bring ya another great Thanksgiving Eve.
CONVOLUTED THINKING
it’s the holidays
when thoughts turn to those of food
not just any food
sweets are thrust from every side
candy fruit cake and apple pie
the list is endless
when I think how weak i am
it makes me shudder
doubtless i shall overeat
so i must set a limit
i hate my fat self
when I look in the mirror
40 pounds over
over what the weight chart says
high school weight days are over
what is sensible?
dare I make it 45
easy to lose 5
just think of the tasty fun
candy fruit cake and mince pie
egg nog rich stuffing
that thanksgiving table spread
how my mouth waters
LOOK! the lady on t.v.
took off 50 with jenny
my god! 50 pounds!
why! 5 pounds would be a snap!
and now I’m resolved
i will sign with jenny
right after the holidays
Tummy, Tummy, oh poor Tummy!
Heaping, steaming platters behold.
A bounty splendorous and yummy,
Nuts to pies to cranberry mold.
Kitchen simmering with flavor,
Smells that cause the nose to rise.
Gather in a whiff to savor,
Indulge behind two droopy eyes.
Voices lure you from your dreaming,
Invite you to your favored chair,
Give you silverware all gleaming,
Do together a Thanksgiving prayer.
And, Tummy, Tummy stop your stressing …
Yams, green beans, creamed corn, rolls with butter, celery sticks and carrot sticks,
mashed potatoes, pumpkin pie, turkey and … dressing
!
Oh turkey again. I pulled open the fridge,
Just yesterday it was hanging from Buck's bridge.
That big fat bird,
he, looking so obsurd.
Feathers twisted on his back to and fro,
A job of plucking, I do hate so.
I pulled him out,
with out a doubt.
The biggest bird I'd ever seen,
but ouuuueeee, oh so goey and lean.
I used a spoon to stuff him completely,
following instructions exactly.
I put him in the oven precisely,
Where he fit so nicely.
While family knocking at the door desperately
All then greeting and smiling so sweetly.
He cooked on hour, then two, then three,
Hurray now he's done yipeeeeeeeee!
All the fix ins are ready,
my hands were warm and steady.
I proudly in front of the oven stood,
He smell so ever lovin good.
O grabbed a big fat potholder,
I pulled him out a bit bolder.
Then in goey turkey grease I slipped,
and over my shoulder that turkey flipped.
Oh so high in the air, Oh I sware,
I seen him laugh, that turkey with flare.
He flew so very high,
landing on grandm's thigh.
There he landed in her lap,
Uncle Ned began to clap.
Her wig flew off took a hop landing over him,
Now one even broke a grin.
My thanksgiving dinner a now disaster,
Everyone has now voted me "The Master."
From now on we all agree,
Ham or turkey it will be.
Thomas Turkey is trying to avoid the dreaded chopping block!
He's trying to become inconspicuous amongst the teeming flock!
As you thank the Good Lord this year for your many blessings,
Nothing would taste sweeter than Peking duck with your dressings!
Kith and kin, may I recommend, might prefer a roast of beef.
Surely, that would save my friends and me a whole heap o' grief!
Goose, roasted tender and brown, you might consider for your fare.
Instead of turkey to grace your board, how about some wild hare!
Vanity, the haughty eagles's trait, which I think is so absurd,
Is what won it the honor of being selected for the national bird!
Now, 'tis well known that Mr. Franklin wanted us for that role.
Good try, Ben my boy! May God bless your thoughtful soul!
During the Thanksgiving Season I'm finding it so hard to relax,
As I scurry about to and fro trying to elude that fearsome axe!
You'd be dining on roasted eagle for Thanksgiving if Ben had had his way!

Thanksgiving day we pray
With a lot to say
The warmth of a home
Which has a tone
Everyone being together
Forever and ever
The food fills us up
With all the cups
We give thanks
With no mistake
Happy Thanksgiving to all
With many more to call
When Jack Frost is abroad
And the Thanksgiving snow falls
When we hear the first sleigh bell’s ring
Christmas isn’t far away at all
So make those lists and join the throng
Of happy shoppers down at the mall
Jared, Jared he's our man, if he can't do it nobody can!
Goff found me hiding in my pity, post thanksgiving day downer
Got me running on my feet, with a cheer for the team(poetry soup)
We are shaken, never out
I let out a shout--hurray!!
Hurray! Gooo Team!!!
I was tagged by James Marshall Goff and I am tagging Jared Pickett to pass on the Holiday
pass along game. No rules--just fun.
What do you do on thanksgiving day,
well, we eat to much,
and then we pray,
watch football games on tv,
a second wind,
maybe break out the xmas tree,
surrounded by family and friends,
talking bout lives and trends,
back to the table for mor to eat,
this time it's diffrent,
time for some sweets,
pies of apple and cherry,
laughing and feeling merry,
holiday season has now come upon us,
rushing and shopping,
making a fuss,
so much to do, after this day,
will we finish it all,
some say, NO WAY,
helping and cleaning, as the day moves along,
feeling the spirit,
singing a song,
now, thanksgiving day is calming down,
get together, gather round,
give everyone hugs and kisses,
tell all how much you've missed them,
now it's time, to fall into sleep,
with cherished memories always to keep.
I thought that my Thanksgiving would be ruined because my cat ran away.
But he returned last night and I give thanks for that today.
I'm thankful for God, my health, my parents and my cat.
My kitty is heavier than a chunk of lead because he's fat.
Turkey is being eaten,
Here and there,
Are members of the
Neighborhood and family.
Kind words of gratitude are
Spoken. Many are giving
God thanks for life, the
Ingredients for success, blood flow through our
Veins, and for food, fun, and fellowship
In a trying time such as this.
Never neglecting sharing
Great tidings and holiday treats.
Dads are watching the many
Athletic events on the T.V.
Yes, Thanksgiving is a great holiday to me.
