Best Bourse Poems

C'Est La Vie

Wish I was a poet, and got well paid
for poems writ whilst wearing suede
and drinking lots ‘n' lots of claret,
in a well-appointed Paris garret

My publisher would love me true,
and pay my rent, when overdue,
so I wouldn't sleep on Montmartre streets
and get under decent people's feets

I'd get well drunk and laid a lot,
(I heard poets do, more oft than not)
and choose, with numbers from a jar,
mam'selles to coucher with each soir.

Les dames Francaises would think me clever
‘cause root and boot are words I'd never
correlate. But sometimes Paris Bourse,
I'd rhyme with sexual intercourse.

And what if, for every verse I penned,
I got a hot brand-new best friend?
I wonder how long could I last,
in a life I led that blazing fast?

My real life's, in truth, synonymous
with being next best to anonymous,
but I suppose that it might be much worse,
had I to catch an early hearse.

An Ugly Visitor, Corona Virus

AN UGLY VISITOR, CORONA VIRUS

We have an ugly visitor;
Corona Virus is his name.
He's prowling like a predator
With an aim to devour or maim.

He disregards every convention.
Schools, airlines,... he shuts down;
Doctors are in his line of elimination
As he locks down town after town!

Countries are wearied from burying people.
Caterpillars are full time grave diggers.
Coffins in a grave are multiple.
Little attention is paid to mourners!

He's the newsmaker of the year,
If there is still such a thing!
For indeed different times are here;
It's a new world of Corona's making!

He found people living in peace,
At least peace as we' had come to know it.
Being, as he is, a life changing disease,
He despoiled in a manner rabied!

"Everyone has to stay at home,
Then the virus will not travel!
No spectators for any sort of game
Or sitting at a bar with a liquor bottle!"

He cares little about national pride.
He looks down upon local wars
Or the special day of a bride!
He shuts down both bank and bourse!

Corona has eclipsed every concern:
Major issues are whitewashed!
How food for your children you will earn
Is rendered insignificant and quashed!

"Call the intelligent men of the land!
Let them cast their lots and tell
When this distress is going to end!
Bring all tools this curse to quell!"

It's been ten months and there's still no cure
Except the recommended hygiene methods.
Governments and institutions must procure
Personal protection and nutrition needs.

The world is hoping for a vaccine,...
Earnestly hoping for a miracle:
That the journey to a medicine
May indeed prove a shorter cycle!

Maybe Corona will make us one:
Oriental, Caucasian, African, all one race,
And all the living under the sun,
Might learn to have a little more grace!

Ask the Messenger

on Earth’s circumvallate
 he would be laid,
 lifeless upon the lap
 of his Mother
 and on that day would be named
 now and forevermore,
 God’s Gether… for in that day
 are all tears gathered
 look at them, and fear
 the things to come, think
 ever deeper now, and greet
 this mourning, hear nature asking
 where, oh where, is he, who
 as our companion, travelled(3)
 all space-time freed of human form
 and feminine traits, and he
 self-named his essence, I-EAGLE-TWO…
 in memory of his father
 mystery of womb, wind, sky, and
 slaughter; held in that “eye” of awe
 as the sunflower’ diurnal motion
 laying openly upon the roof
 of this world, ever watching down
 calling gently to those “friends”
 and his enemies, laughing hauntingly
 at the latter’ lathering fear filled sweats
 as this “(????????)”,
 have you yet guessed this guest?
 at day’s dusk, and then again
 by dawn’s redeeming draw
 his reach is long, and into and through
 your minds he roams, teasing your thoughts
 twisting your faux beliefs
 as does Loki shift from witch to fly
 and consumes your roasted heart
 he, is that warrior’ bathed
 master of that “Fifth Discipline”
 “fostering aspiration” in the minds that seek
 developing “reflective conversation”
 between the strong and meek
 and through a universal rapport
 promotes “understanding complexity”
 “Systems thinking”
 this is his drinking water’ brine
 at his stand beyond,
 as “Keeper of the Western Gate”,
 within this universal bourse,
 upon those “circles of causality”
 he lends his hand to those who can
 to those who cannot, his whist
 he scends upon their brows,
 and boy! is it ever steamy!
 beaming out similes and hyperboles
 and itchy knees to his and hers,
 theirs and those, whose noses know
 the profound truth is fast approaching
 critically fast, that blue
 heated mass of spiritual essence
 that was promised to all of earth’s children
 that this “center” of the sun will come
 returning “hell” to earth to render
 those who earned their promised whipping
 for tipping life in their favor
 so, do look towards your sun,
 focus in upon that inner aye
 and glimpse your own future’s butcher
 and do fear what was foretold to be…

 Thinking’s challenge is to weigh,
 all of one’s life substance;
 quandary thus, illogical fuss,
 which blinds the mind's acutance;
 adscititiously into thoughts bleed,
 vitiated indurate boastance;
 corrumpable sequella fortuity,
 each thought, is truth’s desistance.

 Retrospectively choices trial,
 stands outside an untidy purport;
 merycism seeps beneath one’s deep,
 questions mythical adhort;
 ex postfacto, pride’s precious précis,
 ideas from ideals besort;
 denouement cryptic episode,
 Sphinges contend, issue alamort.

 Sapience elusive rapture,
 most minds need bethink acology;
 humanity’s Id mulled,
 without reference to a doctor of alethiology;
 furgacious notions, become the norm,
 arguments chime atheology;
 Toison d’ or, parley prewar,
 else high angels deem eschatology!

 Medullary substance rare,
 within rabid beings Tour de force;
 coarctation, indeed strangulation,
 dire result for living's bourse;
 Nationalism's agenda, wiled racist theme,
 keeps élan’s cry hoarse;
 emasculation, Republican dream;
 equates rule of thumb perforce.

 Contemplative ideas abound,
 behind the veil of Arriere Pensee;
 insinuation to middle class,
 jokes on all, laity economic refugee;
 elucidation simplistic, vote for change,
 or be laissez-faire etouffee;
 sublevation, certifiable eminency,
 party GOP national expellee!

Flight of Steps

Sinister is the staircase -
the light switch out of reach.
How could my eye find way,
differ honor and breach?

Head dashed against the walls
and lurching I lost course.
Lead these stairs up or down?
Mind like an empty bourse.

Sweet voices call my name
from heaven and from hell
But how do they vary?
Both sound so tempting well.

I will regret my step
wherever I will go:
This step the fall or raise
of my own heart will show.

Confused and blind I seize
the stairway of my life.
Doubts and fears and worries
come only to be rife.

Ere my legs turned jelly
my last cry was for help.
I lost my way and light -
Lord, hear my desperate yelp!

Pyaasa - Thirsty

pyaasa (thirsty) – for guru dutt

i’ll have none of it

the glittering vulgarity on crude display

puffed-up egos wrapped in vacuum-sealed packs

adorning the sterile aisles of shining malls with their endless racks

i’ll have none of it

the broken & battered souls swept up in the tide

of holidays by the sea & drinks on the ninth hole of the course

deaf to all cries & whimpers but for the closing bell of the bourse

i’ll have none of it

the endless parades of ostentatious pomp & raucous laughter

deadened spirits aspiring for nothing more than an unquenchable greed

haughtily trampling the ‘other’ in the crass pursuit of what next desire to feed

i’ll have none of it

the willful silence of the privileged few among the numberless many

so eloquently articulate & quick-witted in hour upon hour of polite chatter

yet mute & shushed by sips of chivas when the raging war outside doesn’t matter

i’ll have none of it

none of this nauseating mockery & none of this reeking sham

i’ll have none of it for i was there once & lapped up the vulgarity of it all

i’ll have none of it now, though, so you may as well put me up against the wall

i’ll have none of it now for i was there once & soaked in that intoxicating air

i’ll have none of it now, though, so if tonight i sleep forever, i’ll be the last one to care

The New York Exchange is located on Wall Street.
Here in Lower Manhattan, business people meet.
Between opening and closing bells in each day’s course,
millions of corporate shares are traded on this bourse.
As company equities change hands on the Big Board,
investors from all over seek to reap their reward.

Whenever there are more participants who buy,
the prices of company stocks can go quite high.
Some large fortunes can be made when “buy” is the word.
Then it is a question of common or preferred.
However, when orders are coming in to sell,
falling stock prices to some people can be hell.
Do not always panic if bad occurs here.
Handsome rewards can come to those who persevere.

There is always that “quick killing” people want to see.
Those things are more fiction than fact, unfortunately.
Making money can be a true realization.
You must be in for the long run, not speculation.
Seek the successful firms for capitalization.
Knowledge and patience are what all people should know.
If you want to gamble, go to a casino.

Omphalos

Beneath the fabled, innocent and polished mind
In a tinderbox wrapped up by an askant beldam’s hand
Above an unmarked grave that is welcoming, rather kind
A pair of eyes noticed a hue in the dunes of white sand.

Nom de Dieu! Shall we move forward as I amn’t uncivil,
Scarcely having been crude or a tad coarse,
Do not trap me in the cyclone of this swivel,
Do not tempt me with a sale on a second-grade bourse.

A gauche tongue displayed a tonne of venom
Is it just a gene that could not have kept it shut?
There is nothing more that destroys a character plenum
There is no pain anymore that felt like a punch in the gut.

Ohh Helen, this time a polemic won’t start a war
I originate in my own omphalos, in silence and solitude,
Driven by sheer desire to wear nothing more
Then my pallium until my last prelude.

Rejection Slips 4

Rejection Slips 4

Editor's Notes
by Michael R. Burch

Eat, drink and be merry
(tomorrow, be contrary).

( and complain
in bad refrain,
but please, not till I'm on the plane!)

Write no poem before its time
(in your case, this means never).

Linger over every word
(by which, I mean forever).

By all means, read your verse aloud.
I'm sure you'll be a star
(and just as distant, when I'm gone);
your poems are beauteous (afar).

Less Heroic Couplets: Rejection Slip
by Michael R. Burch

pour Melissa Balmain

Whenever my writing gets rejected,
I always wonder how the rejecter got elected.
Are we exchanging at the same Bourse?
(Excepting present company, of course!)

I consider the term “rejection slip” to be a double entendre. When editors reject my poems, did I slip up, or did they? Is their slip showing, or is mine?

Ode to Postmodernism, or, Bury Me at St. Edmonds!
by Michael R. Burch

"Bury St. Edmonds—Amid the squirrels, pigeons, flowers and manicured lawns of Abbey Gardens, one can plug a modem into a park bench and check e-mail, files or surf the Web, absolutely free."—Tennessean News Service. (The bench was erected free of charge by the British division of MSN, after a local bureaucrat wrote a contest-winning ode of sorts to MSN.)

Our post-modernist-equipped park bench will let
you browse the World Wide Web, the Internet,
commune with nature, interact with hackers,
design a virus, feed brown bitterns crackers.

Discretely-wired phone lines lead to plugs—
four ports we swept last night for nasty bugs,
so your privacy's assured (a threesome's fine)
while invited friends can scan the party line:

for Internet alerts on new positions,
the randier exploits of politicians,
exotic birds on web cams (DO NOT FEED!) .
The cybersex is great, it's guaranteed

to leave you breathless—flushed, free of disease
and malware viruses. Enjoy the trees,
the birds, the bench—this product of Our pen.
We won in with an ode to MSN.

Fate hurls a sway
Through night and day
To fling a play

Play forms in kind
A state of mind
In sanguine finds

Finds that we make
Can fashion stake
In norms we take

Take funds a cause
In poise and course
That bear a bourse

Bourse in due time
Can set the chimes
To pact and mime

Mime in sure steps
Can forge a map
Or set a trap

Trap can contain
Our hollow strains
In empty gains

Gains can be lost
In fate we toss
To rid the moss
