Myth of the peculiar pelican
Whose bill bloodies its feathery breast
Feeding blood to the chicks in its nest
Ancient acts ever evangelic
Sole sacrifice for the pelican
Whose beak speaks more than a relic can

36 Words 6 Lines Light Verse
Pelicans appear in Christian iconography
as symbols to verify Christ's self-sacrifice.
Attributions to Dixon Lanier Merritt
(often mistakenly credited to Ogden Nash)
for authorship of the popular Pelican Limerick.

Premium MemberHomage To the Gay Poets

I was wondering how many renowned gay poets I know—
Like Oscar Wilde, Walt Whitman, and Arthur Rimbaud?
Edna St. Vincent Millay and Alice Walker, I am told,
Both Sylvia Plath and Gertrude Stein were rather bold.
The “Beat Generation’s” W. H. Burroughs and Jack Kerouac
Emily Dickinson and T. S. Eliot were not free from attack.
Then, there was Paul Verlaine, an exceptional find,
While W. H. Auden and Langston Hughes come to mind.

I wonder what inner conflicts they must have endured
Living in a puritanical society, their sexuality inured.
In compelling verse, they revealed parts of themselves
Some readers carefully hiding their works on the shelves.
Had these marvelous poets not been born out of time
Colorful lives might not have overwhelmed their rhyme.
It is fitting we acknowledge their outstanding contributions
Without undue reference to their personal attributions.

Abrogated Alcove

when you wanted to give me
you never said for a while
salavic eclipse per epilepsy
test of the taste then a bile
like a swing in the atmosphere's mood
scared earth passionate puke
next the sky seemed to be soothe
catharsis resetting her view

I never held back
like the waves pulling her muse
contractions of zeal moistened hard
supine sand tracing the tune
chaperoned by a virtuoso,
torrent complimenting the blue
undaunted, feigning its strokes
catharsis resetting her view

This mouth counted its syllables
tossed each subsequently
watched them dance dribbles
erected a mood in your feelings
like the wind and tiresome trees
the former a bow from the latter drew
shriek a shudder, tortured trees
catharsis resetting her view

I'll love no more,
feelings transmogrified into glue
like winter firstly to the earth draw
catharsis resetting her view.

Suitable Attributions

The insanity of humanity brings forth days of penal retribution,
in reality, the fatality of good deeds deserves a substitution.
All the brutality and profanity provokes nothing but destitution,
while the vitality and good mentality is lost in distribution.
Proper formality and morality should be the greatest contribution,
but the severe volcanity and silly inanity creates an unfit institution.
Sometimes plain mundanity and refined urbanity are a suitable attribution.

Disaster Quelled

My worst fear occurred and I did slip and clamber,
With people watching my statements of thunder,
But I did shout my attributions of collectivity grand,
Until they understood not to tremor my shaky hand.

It was not thought to be bad, hurtful or piercingly sharp,
Rather it was analogous with a soft melodious harp,
So it took me all my intelligent mind and heart eager,
To reduce their mutterings down to that of a wager.

No longer were they disgusted at my renouncing distance,
Nor did they stage a joust in bold, contentious resistance,
But they asked about my qualifications and experience,
That my spirit did swell in cultures kind convergence.

Timothy Rarely Laughed

Timothy rarely laughed but had a certain wicked grin,
not that grin when one smiles too widely:
his untrustworthy looks were very scary:
why couldn't he act like the happy Huckleberry Finn?

Unforgiving, rebellious, arrogant and insane
were the many attributions to his character;
everybody hated his attitude and colored hair:
they avoided him when he swung his cane.

He had no friends, except his mom offering spoils;
his attire was not trendy, he had a long, red beard
which he never trimmed to look attractive to girls:
they saw his dark side and wouldn't mutter a word.

Children were horrified of his gaunt body, they thought
he was another Jesse Poneroy who tortured little boys
and killed girls, but fear was as compelling as doubt:
his reputation got tarnished by rumors, not actual facts.

Timothy rarely laughed but had a certain wicked grin,
until now nobody has figured out what had built inside of him:
rejection, hostility, animosity increased his acute pain,
but he defied them by wearing a hat with a turned-down brim.

Birthday Attributions

By GIRBERT MAPENGO MWANGUKU

Decades on the run
I still shine under the sun
A soldier so strong I stand
Trying to be a hero in my homeland
Helping this celebration are mocking birds singing
As my ears get fed with jingle bells ringing

Grown up; ready to put on rings
But still worried about what tomorrow brings
Celebrating the day some wished I would die
With a big cake on the table about to cut a pie
Only one prayer of thanks to God for the life so precious
Hoping never to change to become a monster malicious

The Reflex In the Mirror

We transmit with our attitudes,
We transmit with our virtues.

We transmit with our actions,
We transmit with our attributions.

We transmit as we link,
We transmit how we treat those whom we love.

We transmit with our solidarity,
We transmit with our fraternity.

We transmit as we live the life,
We transmit if we respect all the life types.
