Yesterday's Child
"How sweet to the heart are the scenes of my childhood"
Samuel Woodworth, 1785-1842
They smile at me from faded photographs;
I touch the glass and wish they were still here,
recalling tears and happy childhood laughs.
I speak to them as though they were still near -
it's been a while, but memories are strong.
I blow my nose and wipe away a tear.
I haven't seen them for so very long;
I close my eyes and think of yesterday -
I'm soothed by feelings that I still belong.
Regretting there's so much I long to say;
a grown up now - as old as they were then -
and not a child who'd only wished to play.
I haven't seen them since the age of ten.
We'll meet again someday. Ah yes, but when?
