Diana, c.1519 - Correggio - WikiArt.org

...and so I am wonderstruck by the blood red moon as it rises above the edge of the world. On this night Selene* with chariot and horses of silver, is pulling the moon across the sky. On this night when dark witches want her to die, they draw their own blood to work more powerful spells, trying to draw Selene's spirit unto themselves, but the Goddess is wise and with the flick of a mystical rein, turns the red to silver again, and continues her journey across the midnight sky. *Selene: Greek Goddess of the Moon Art: c.1519 - Correggio For: Wonderstruck Poetry Contest Sponsor: Robert James Liguori November 20, 2021

I love reading about the gods and goddesses ~ although confusing at times :) Pagans had one for everything, it seems. So, I thoroughly enjoyed your poem, written beautifully. Congratulations on your win!

I enjoyed this very much. You are a very talented poet. I didn't know there was a Greek Goddess Selene. I learned something today. Good luck in the poetry contest. Best wishes, Bryan

Thank you. It was fun to write. I am no expert in Mythology, and it is always fun to learn. In classical times, Selene was often identified with Artemis. Selene and Artemis were also associated with Hecate and all three were regarded as moon and lunar goddesses, but only Selene was regarded as the personification of the Moon itself. Her Roman equivalent is Luna.
