Winter Sonata - POTD Premiere Contest Winner

Winter Sonata 11-29-23 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Winter Sonata In grave allegro solo grey gathers, Strings of winter fantasias Brewing staccatos of frozen fall remnants, Downbeats for the first movement As shivering sleet wipes away bucolic barcarolles Rocking on sapphire barges, Harbingers of hoarfrost and hibernation, When leafless boughs conduct the opening motif To summon deepening darkness From restrained shadows of turbulence To beat warnings on frosted windows Of snug dens – sheltered hallows. Sweet solstice flutes sing adagio Then scatter crystalline mists across snow packed paths In the movement pathetique when sunglow Glides between aspen, Ankle deep in fleecy billows, Sugar flakes flutter in Heaven’s perfect pitch Rhythmic silent rests hypnotize crisp midnights When fluttering flakes of dreamy andantes Ride on melodic cantabile whispers In flurries of fleecy decrescendos Spells of codas, enthralled by idle snowfall, Glitter in lyric tinsel of sparkling crystal beads on twigs. Movement presto crescendos in frenzied storms Snowfall pizzicatos fall in descending measures When rondos of wind song ensembles Ascend in frigid notes of icy scales That pirouette in pulsing beats with resonate strings Plucked by boreas in thundersnows percussions, Vivace mistrals whirl in powdery ghosts That spin in tremolo trills of icicles, And in whiteout scherzos of blizzard sonatas, Dizzy with solstice frosty fevers As winter’s thundering cadence modulates Into vernal sighs of resolution.

Dear Samba, my favorite musician-poet strikes again with yet another symphony of euphonic sounds and delightful seasonal imagery. I love "Sweet solstice flutes sing adagio" and "When rondos of wind song ensembles" among many other delicate, delicious, and dulcet lines. Also love the modulation and resolution to vernal sighs. Pure loveliness. I meant to wish you a happy birthday yesterday but got waylaid... hope it was as enjoyable to you as your poetry is to me. Congrats on your POTD for this charming sonata... a Fav for me. December blessings from your R&R Bro

Sam, even though the wind brings a chill and the sun sets sooner this time of year, it's such a sensational season. Magical and spiritual, all at the same time. Like in this thought: "Sugar flakes flutter in Heaven’s perfect pitch." I'm in complete awe, my dear friend. Congratulations, on Poem of the Day. Many wonderful blessings to you. :) Hugs, Brandy

Dearest Mala, thank you so much dear friend! What a joy to create a poem around music and winter. Have to admit I do love winter and to craft a poem around winter - creating a sonata - was an inexpressible joy! Had fun using the three movements of the sonata to shape the three different stanzas. I am so honored by the POTD -very special indeed! Sometimes we get to write a piece like Winter Sonata, and all of the hard work, learning and disappointments come together for us like music! I am so glad you enjoyed this winter musical interlude! Blessings, Love, Hugs!

Many congratulations Sam with your POTD - very poetic and incredibly well written. The poem is so descriptive with exquisite words ( need a dictionary for some I must confess) I especially love the line,’ Then scatter crystalline mists across snow packed paths’ - wonderful imagery throughout. Well done. An impressive write. Blessings to you .

Hi Jim! Thank you so much! Tickled that you picked up on the Vivaldi feeling of The Four Seasons as I could hear it running through my mind when writing this piece! It was fun to look at the traditional three movements of a sonata and use their tempos as part of each stanza! This contest theme is a musicians dream! If I remember correctly you are a musician! Sending you my gratitude for your congratulatory note and blessings!
