Why I Don't Celebrate Christmas - Fiction

Grandma died when I was 18 years old, on Christmas day. I never really got to know her well, since the family had pretty much kept their distance from her due to her 'weird religion.' I grew up unchurched, as they say, and never had any interest in religion of any kind. Today, however, I practice the same religion as grandma did. Let me explain to you how that happened, and why I no longer celebrate Christmas. When grandma died it was determined that the house and all its contents would be auctioned off. She lived in a humble little bungalow, not unlike the others on her street. Nothing she owned was of any value to the family, and I got the dubious assignment of going through her personal items to determine what might be sold and what should be thrown away. Needless to say, the last thing that I wanted to do was to go through an old lady's things, grandma or not. But, as I wasn't given a choice in the matter, I soon got to work. As I was going through her nightstand drawers, I found what must have been her study Bible. The reason I say that is because certain passages were highlighted in pink, yellow and green, from Genesis through Revelation. To be honest, I had never even looked at a Bible before. But I was curious as to what had spurred such an intense interest in it for her. I had to admit, the few experiences that I did have with my grandmother were always pleasant. Of all my relatives, she was always the kindest. She seemed to have a glow about her that I found peaceful, comforting. Anyway, with no one else around and having nothing else scheduled for the day, I decided to take a little break. With Bible still in hand, I opened it to the book of Matthew. I started reading from chapter one onward and before I knew it, I had reached the end of his gospel. Naturally, I had heard of Jesus through the grapevine, as it were. Some of my friends called themselves Christian, though I found it rather strange that they really didn't appear to be any different from my other friends. But the Jesus that I had just read about in grandma's Bible was entirely different from what I assumed he would be. As a young person, I took pride in staying well-informed as to current events and had an avid interest in history. Starting with his birth, these are some of the discrepancies I discovered between the Biblical Jesus and what I now like to call the pop-culture or Hollywood Jesus. 1. According to Matthew's account, Jesus was born when the shepherds were still living outside with their flocks. Being familiar with weather patterns in Israel in late December, that it is the rainy, cold season, and that traditionally shepherds had wintered their flocks long before then, I concluded that Jesus could not have been born on December 25th (I later learned that many scholars believe that he was likely born early October). 2. I thought about the nativity scenes that can be found at many homes and churches. The Bible record shows that by the time the Magi reached the child, he was no longer in a manger, but living in a house, and that he was no longer a newborn babe, as Herod's mad edict to destroy the child included infant boys up to two years old, according to the timing that he had ascertained from the Magi. Now, I'm no scholar, though I'd always done well in school. But these things I deduced for myself at my very first reading, though additional research since has greatly enhanced and reinforced my understanding of the events surrounding Jesus' birth. But there were other things that Matthew had to say about Jesus that also caught my eye. For example, Jesus said that his followers should be peaceful, even doing good to their enemies. I began to meditate on the two world wars of the 20th century, fought among so-called Christian nations. I asked myself: If all of the Christians in Germany had refused to support Hitler's rise to power, would the holocaust and WWII have occurred? And what about the thirty years war in Europe? And the hostilities between Protestant Christians and Catholic Christians in Ireland? Not to mention the fact the Jesus I was reading about didn't seem the least bit interested in bingo, or church bake sales, or money at all for that matter. And nowhere in the account could I find any evidence that he or any of his followers ever dressed in outlandish outfits. As I read on, I tried to find some evidence, any evidence, that at least some of his followers celebrated his birth. Nada. Instead, Jesus seemed keenly interested in his disciples recognizing his death, a concept I found quite odd at the time. Now, of course, I get it. It was his death as a man, not his birth as a baby, that saves us from our sins and opens the door to eternal life.   Looking back, I understand now why grandma refused to celebrate the holidays with us. She simply could find no evidence in her well-worn Bible that the celebrations of Christmas, Easter, and others were things that Jesus, her savior and king, wanted her to do. Since then, I have done much research on the subject of holidays and have found that most of the customs associated with them come from pagan rituals and concepts, such as the Easter bunny, Santa Claus and so on.   Grandma has long been dead, but the memory of her and what she stood for still burns in my heart. Though I didn't really know her well, I feel as though I did. At the very least I can say that I identify with her. Someday, when all things have been set straight on this planet by means of the One whom she put faith in, I hope to see my grandmother again; young, healthy and happy.

Wow! Thank you, Tom, for sharing this eye-opening narrative, simple and direct. My my my, most profound is the question of what's more of significance; Jesus' birth or death, and I find myself agreeing without hesitation, his death takes precedence. For it was said that a Redeemer would be sent die in our stead, thus reconciling humanity back with the Creator. Then I've heard of other Saviors. Who knows. Peace and blessings.

I thoroughly enjoyed your Narrative, Tommy. It was well written, and the information was solid in my book. Jesus was the perfect example of the way a person, that wants to please God, should live. Very few people know the will of God at an age that it appears Jesus did. To commit one's life to a life of service and a willingness to live on what is provided each day, is definitely for those that have a calling in their hearts to do so. Your scripture references were great. God bless, Bill

May grandma rest in perfect peace Tom. Nice piece from a different view, however ones birth and death should be celebrated regardless of the initial dates, or certainties, don't you think?

I used to think that, until I did the research and study on the origins of certain traditions, festivities and rituals. Most of them, including birthday celebrations, have their origins in superstition or idolatry. For Scriptural references, see my reply to Andrea below. Thx for visit Tonye. You're welcome here any time

Well, to tell the truth, although I am a great fan of the teachings of Christ, I'm not big on the Bible. Sorry. A beautiful story about your grandmother. I can understand why some wouldn't want to celebrate Christmas and Easter, it's all so commercialised. However it's all about Family and getting together for us...Hugs

Unfortunately Christmas has been hijacked and commercialised. But for those who know what Christmas really is all about, it is worth celebrating, irrespective of the day it is done. // paul

Maybe the grandma part here is fiction but I have the feeling you do not celebrate the holidays anyway. Nice writing and to each his own.you are certainly right on with the nativity scene. To think the three wise men appeared upon his birth contradicts Scripture.

Of course Jesus was not born in winter. It was probably in April.i just don't see what's wrong with commemorating this miraculous event even if some fun traditions got associated with it. Kids love fun stuff and I think my childhood was all the better by having gifts, candy and get togethers for Xmas and Easter. I don't mind if Easter is the name for the goddess of fertility. I think rebirth of nature as well as the resurrection are both wonderful to celebrate. My best memories involve Christmas

Thx for your thoughtful reply. I guess for me the question is not what are my personal feelings or views, but what is God's view? Is there Scriptural precedent? How did he feel about mixing false worship with true in OT times? - Exodus 20:1-6; Isaiah 52:1. How did he feel about it in NT era? 2 Corinthians 6:14-18. And is there any reason to believe he has changed his mind about it in our day? Colossians 2:8; Malachi 3:6

Very well said; lots to think about. I do celebrate Christmas, Easter, etc.. Taking any opportunity to join man in prayer. There is power in prayer, and God can use both the sinner and the priest to bring illumination. As my faith is Christian Mysticism, my interest is more in presence than religion. Means nothing to me, as to what date Christ was or was not born...my focus on the fact that Jesus was born, and allowed Himself to be a divine vessel, bring self awareness of the Christ spirit into humanity.

- A good story ... truth or not - The Christmas celebration we have today has nothing to do with God / Jesus - what do the Christmas tree and elves have to do with Jesus? - The tradition has become a cliché ... Christmas is about more than precious gifts and lots of food ... great expectations ... we do Christmas shopping like never before ... - I have stopped celebrating Christmas ... not because of religion ... I have jumped off the merry-go-round - hugs

Fascinating. I've encouraged skeptics to look up Christmas on Wikipedia and just start clicking on the links; yule log, mistletoe, evergreen tree, etal. As Charlotte alluded to below, Christmas is just a rebranding of the Saturnalia

I remember reading this before on instagram, its interesting to read how different views can be put into words, be it fiction or not, i believe everything we weave comes from a deep place, you have a very deep way of thinking; however, i think the problem isnt religion, or followers of religion, as we cant blame evil doings of world sociopathic antisocial leaders on the helpless ones forced to follow orders, ive never read bible.i respect individual differences, so i cant say much, well written.

No fair, I don't know your real name so I can't bestow a proper nickname. Anyway, I agree that respect and tolerance are essential, though I don't cross the interfaith line. As a former Roman Catholic I've seen two sides and knowing what I now know I'm set for life

Tomszy , lol (new nickname) i grew up in a multicultural environment and they respect all races and religion—buddists hindus christians and muslims celebrate eid christmas and diwali, so i think i find it very normal although some from other countries may find it strange, as i come from a 100 percent muslim country. Malaysia is a very diverse place. Chinese indians and malays and eurasians all are very open minded but ofcourse theres racism everywhere but i think that is the main reason i have an open mindset. Maybe that would explain why i respect your religious beliefs too. Although i dont know much about it.

I loved the story you told about your Oma! Interesting how one's beliefs derive. Jesus is not a religion, and I do not believe that if you do not accept the holy spirit you'll go to hell. There are non-Christian's who act more like Christians than those who claim to be Christian. I did study with Jehovah's Witnesses for 9 months or so, my sister is a baptized Jehovah's Witness, and I do believe they have the most accurate teachings of Christianity of all the beliefs.

your personal beliefs thinly disguised as a fictional story? i don't affix any labels to myself, religious or otherwise, that's not to say i have no spiritual beliefs, too many strange experiences from an early age to be dismissive... saturnalia/saturn/santa/satan - an anagram - much to read into that...

Thinly disguised? Ha! Busted. If you ever want to do some fascinating research compare Odin with Santa Claus. I found at least ten similarities

Her sweetness gained from her nurturing. Your quote: “It was his death as a man, not his birth as a baby, that saves us from our sins and opens the door to eternal life.” The celebrations of Easter, Christmas more for our children. But the idea is more for understanding the why or whose birthday it is, Christmas Jesus birth. Easter, Jesus rose to sit on the right hand of the father. Everyone believe is different and not my place to change them. I did see you placed fiction in the title. Enjoyed reading my friend

A splendid narrative, Tom. I'm always fascinated with how each of us discovers, God, faith, Jesus, etc. The grandma in this story had her own revelations as did the young boy. The story touched me, and I'm grateful you shared it with us. Have a blessed evening, Sara

Jesus was born in Palestine... but guess thats just not a topic of discussion here.. really interesting how you found your faith.. I can see your viewpoints.. people should be free to be who they want to be and what ever they want to follow.. live and let live.. and write nice poetry.. thats what i say..

The best about the future is that the Bible predicts it. Jesus predicts much of it in the gospels. Scholars in an advance study right now are studing Psalms 83. But what you are looking forward to is the Rapture. Ask friends about that they have the simple answer.

No Holidays, probably Jehovah witness. a denomination not my own. But some of my family. Much of what you see is not true even in the movies. But the only facts you need are 1. He died 2. He rose again. 3. Believe this. the rest about God will amaze you. Such as Believing It was the Holy Spirit that got you the job of doing that you discribe. I didnt read it all but I read what I needed.
