When I Was Ten
Away back then, when I was ten,
Was truly a long time ago.
I was a child, still running wild,
And of troubles I didn't know.
World War One had been fought
And our freedom bought,
When I was a child of ten.
With the war to end all wars ended,
We'd never see war again.
Innocently, I laughed and played.
There was nothing of which I was afraid.
We ran in the sun and we slid in the snow,
We liked to see our gardens grow.
The year was Nineteen Twenty Eight,
When I swung so hard on the garden gate
And laughed because I was finally ten
And would never be younger than ten again.
