Toms Travels

In a show of manic one-upmanship
With my wife saying, “Just get a grip.”
I planned an adventure to show I’m well travelled
The spoiler to that is the whole thing unravelled

I looked at the brochures and boy was I keen
Determined to find somewhere Tom hadn’t been
That man is a nomad, he never sits still
He just grabs a suitcase and travels at will

[At this point please lend me a bit of your time
for this advance warning of appalling rhyme]
My legs are so white that I ought to be sunning ’em
I’ll find somewhere warm that’s eluded Tom Cunningham

I made a quick sandwich with pickle from Branston
And then thought EUREKA…I’ll call Richard Branson
I sold a few organs and Gran’s silver spoon
And raised enough money to fly to the moon

He said he does orbits then back down to earth
A trip to the moon was more grief than it’s worth
I grabbed Branson’s beard and said “Listen to me,
you’re gonna help me outdo Mr C.”

Well, long story short, I arrived on old Luna
Tom might have planned it but I got there sooner
Then a little green man said, “Is Earth where you’re from?
When you get back home again… say ‘Hi’ to Tom.”

Thanks, Ilene. I do love a good honest rhyme, but sometimes a deliberately cringe-worthy one is such good old fashioned fun that I just can’t help myself. Terry

Thank you, Constance. This was one of those poems that had me grinning at some of the lines before I had written them. That might sound odd but it’s how it was. POTD was still an unexpected and pleasant surprise though. Terry

Terry, this is a hoot-'n-a-half...and there's not a thing wrong with the rhyming. And I'm sure Mr. C....whose Italian travelogue I just read yesterday...would agree. A delightful choice for POTD, as well.

Good fun write Terry, yeah Tom’s a real globetrotter, you name it he’s been there before, but has he ever done a weekend in Skegness or been to Kelso racecourse? I doubt it very much, they’re all on my bucket list, congratulations on a spooftacular, POTD, cheers David

From the moment I decided to write this, Milt, the words just flowed. A few minutes tidying the last line to get the flow right and it was done, dusted and posted. With that Godawful ‘sunning ‘em’ rhyme in mind, I did wonder if you Americans would pronounce Tom’s surname cunning-ham or cunning-em as we do. But, hey, I got away with it. Thanks, Milt. Terry

That's the way the mind works sometimes, Terry. We struggle for the right words that just don't seem to come to us, but then thoughts start to flow like rapids rushing, and BOOM... there's a great poem! You can write about the Mayor's absence from Soup Creek while he was cavorting in Italy, eating pizza and drinking vino instead of upholding the job he was sworn to do. lol

It’s a strange irony that my last poem took four days to finally read right and went all but unnoticed. This ditty took all of twenty minutes and is POTD. Thanks for the kind compliment, Jenna. (Now, what else can I write about Mr Marmite?)

I’ve cracked it, Tom. If you want POTD just be sure to include the word ‘Tom’ in your verses. I think my last POTD was ‘Tom’ based. But if you want royalties… on your bike…. Or the mode of transport of your choice ;-)
