at the side of the street
Suzanne's blood soaked
the new fallen pristine snow
mother was screaming . . . .
frozen- went into a silent world
a place safe and peaceful
dreamy comfortable
saw things of beauty and let no one in
heard but did not respond
grandma
gave up an attic room high in the house
and there in silence
with dolls and old clothes and jewelry
made up stories
saw the seasons changing from an oval window
spring unfolding, summer flowers, rain falling
snow cascading down
wrote stories
how long was this silent dream
days, years, perhaps minutes, a moment
but I was a child
wrapped in a black coat
of silent comfort
