** It was a lovely spring day. The sun greeted me with a smile. I heard the sound of rat-a-tat-tat. Sounds coming from the roof. I gazed out the large window. There sat a red-bellied woodpecker. Dressed for destruction in his red hard hat. Sporting a checkered black and white overcoat.   This crazed little bird, sat on a metal vent pipe. He looked at me and winked. He proceeds to drill.   He stopped, rather dumfounded. He shook his head, looking confused and dazed. He danced to the right side. Like a mad man, he continued his craze. I watched this bird for hours. determined not to give up on his quest. Finally, the woodpecker flew off, comely retreating. He lands on an oak tree in final defeat.    4/2/2022 A Brain Strand Standard Poetry Contest Sponsor: Brian Strand ~ 1st ~

This is too cute Debra. I love woodpeckers. They're so pretty with their red heads and mottled body. This little bird was quite confused and figured that was the toughest wood he had ever seen. Great write. God Bless, JB

Hi! Judy, I found out that woodpecker's "drum" on metal to attract a mate, they usually will stop after mating season. Thanks for taking the time to read the poem and your comment. Blessings ~ Debra

The woodpecker seems to have been blind folded ! Usually such a mistake, these birds do not make . However you had a chance to watch him from close quarters ! Did he ever suspect that his stupid act will fall in the eyes of a poet and will be turned into a poem...! Really enjoyed. :) :)

Valsa, I enjoyed your comment. I went to YouTube and looked "Woodpeckers drumming on metal". Woodpeckers do "drum" on metal to attract a mate. I'm glad you enjoyed the poem. Blessings ~ Debra

It seems that get a delight from pecking on aluminum pipes for some reason. I wonder if they try to peck into electrical transformers? I enjoyed reading this one. Your visit to my page was uplifting. Sara
