The Race Is Within

I first began running, just to have fun, A way to exercise out in the sun. A light wind was blowing, what a pleasure, The time alone was a hidden treasure. I found myself running mile after mile, Never a thought of technique or style. Slowly but surely, I picked up my pace, Then I decided to enter a race. Everyone was tense, waiting for the gun, Muscles flexed and ready to run. The start was fast, and up a hill. Adrenaline flowing, what a thrill. The pack was tight, too many feet, Time to gut up, I had to dig deep. I need to get out, I need to accelerate, Increase my turnover rate. Nearing halfway, I have my plan, I’ll start picking off man after man. I ‘ll consistently focus on the attack, I’ll soon catch up with the lead pack. Now that I’m here, just one mile to go, Everyone is tiring, we’re beginning to slow. Gathering our strength, holding the pace, Preparing to sprint to the end of the race. Based on the past, I know what I need, I’ll start my kick early; I don’t have much speed. The last guy is giving in, I’ve got this, I did it, I win.

Bill--you captured the essence of running in a race so well. I found myself running alongside you (as we once did in our younger days) every much a part of the scene and thoughts as you were. You told a marvelous story poetically, a skill I'm learning from you, dear hubby. You're right, racing comes from within. I learned that, too, from you. Du bist der Beste, hugs, me

You were the best runner I've ever coached, Sara. You listened to what I said and then gave 100% in every race. Nothing was as gratifying is that 8-mile Turkey Trot together and training for your first Marathon. Then running the White Rock 1/2 Marathon together. Good memories. Thanks for your willingness to share adventures with me. You're the best, Sara. Love, Bill

Yep, had a couple ready to post and wrote a couple more. I like it when I get a little free time to write and post instead of just read, comment, and encourage. Thanks for the encouragement, my friend. Bill

Hi Bill, You brought the reader "in" your race within. It was as though I was there as you crossed the finish line. Well done:-) Alexis

Thanks for running along with me, Alexis. It was a big part of my life when I was competing and then coaching, high school, college and adult runners for about 50 years. Now I just watch on T.V. Thanks for the visit and comments, my friend. Smiles ~ Blessings Bill
