The Playground
I still recall the playground at my school.
The bell for recess rang, and out we’d run.
It was time to practice the Golden rule:
choose teams and do fun things beneath the sun.
We girls jumped rope; we all had to take turns.
Sometimes I twirled the rope; sometimes I’d jump.
We laughed and played and had no big concerns.
We’d go on swings; our legs we’d have to pump
to get us higher, higher to the sky.
That jungle gym! Sometimes I’d catch a boy
close by. Girls’ underwear he’d try to spy,
for girls wore skirts in those day, but oh, what joy
of simply being kids and so carefree.
The best part of my school day – time of glee!
