The New Cat

I set her on the floor. Two eyes, like bright periwinkle blooms, peered out from a brown masked- bandit face. Lilah, our Blue Calico, warily approached this strange intruder. And I looked on, unsure how they’d react; then Lilah hissed! Extending a leg, Lilah took a swipe. at our new kitty; Sooky stood her ground. Seeming unruffled, she struck back with one small paw. . . Two weeks later, I watched Lilah gently lick the face and tummy of her new-found little friend.

This is such a charmer! The two-part vignette of old cat meeting new cat with two weeks in between makes a nice allegory for accepting others who are new or different. Touching.

If you lived in my neighborhood, you could adopt one of the many strays - like, we feed 7 on our front porch every day. Your write brings out the fact that kitties are unpredictable - enemies one day buddies the next. There are exceptions of course. Congrats on the selection and keep those pet poems coming. Love, daver

Thanks so much for your kind comments, Andrea! This particular poem reminds me of another of mine (great minds think alike!) called "Cat on a Hot Rin Tin Tin Woof"....(I think the title was better than the poem...LOL! ) pg. 4 of my poems. I would love to read your other "cat poetry"! We all look forward to your storehouse of poems..!! So nice to have you aboard!! :)

I have been reading so many of your poems, Andrea, and must say that you are one of the finest poets on the soup! I see how gifted with each and every one you are, and that you are willing to try so many various forms. Terrific...I admire your work very much! (this one is delightful)! ps..to answer your question on my blog...at the very bottom of each soup page, in the black area, it says"Contact Us" written in yellow. That is how to e-mail the Soup Managers. Thanks for your support, Love, Carrie
