The Mirror of the Lake
Shy autumn first appeared in scarlet blush
to kiss the silent mirror of the lake
as umber shadows gathered in the hush
of amber afternoon and rose to take
the waning glow of summer into night.
The ginger leaves of maples echo still
a decoupage of August's blazing light
that spread like flames upon the cresting hill
then downward to the water's gleaming run.
They spill upon the glass like lava sear
amidst a mist of steaming cinnamon,
the saffron embers whispers in the ear
of pilgrim day to one last journey make
to view its image mirrored in the lake.
