My stepdad struggled against death with alzheimers,
even when it got to the point he was in great pain,
choking from his inability to remember how to swallow
and these are the kinds of words I think a person with no
memories and struggling against death needs to hear.
The evening’s come. Now close your eyes, And gently drift into the night. Release your soul from earthly ties; The evening’s come. Now close your eyes. Move on beyond the star-laced skies Until you find the Greater Light. The evening’s come. Now close your eyes, And gently drift into the night.

Hi Andrea,,,,,you are right about the theme...the background on your poem is very sad too. A diseased mind like this one is incapable of relaxing fully. Trapped with fear and irrationality...Congrats on this winner. Your personal writes are the best. Gwendolen

A gentle way with words that allows the person concerned to move on in peace knowing those around them acknowledge they have fought all they can and that now their time has come... Always going to be a difficult subject and time and my thoughts goes to those who may be going through similar circumstance right now...

Sometimes it seems people need "permission" before they succumb to death. These loving words would have made the transition much easier, Andrea. Best wishes in Gareth's contest, Carolyn

Andrea this is such a beautiful poem like a chant, I'll think of it as a hospice chant. Really lovely. Must have been a difficult time. It rarely comes easily. Good luck in the contest. I am taking my time for poetry right now, many other things to deal with, but love checking in to read yours and some others.
