The Bounty of a Long Life
What of life’s bounty will a long life ensure?
What value is purpose as life we endure?
Is it beauty, talent, or money we need?
Is it fame or glory, or some secret creed?
From the dawns early light ‘til twilight’s sunset,
Which way shall I travel, which way’s my best bet?
All I am is what I eat someone once said,
Or am I the thoughts coming out of my head?
We can’t take it with us, it must not be things.
Surely, it’s not houses, or cars, or jeweled rings,
It must be intrinsic, memories, and such.
The things that our hearts are longing for so much.
If a long life with purpose is what’s in store,
We’ll be taking much less and giving much more.
