That Was Then, This Is Now

I love hearing stories,
stories from my grandparents.
They love to tell stories,
stories from many years ago.
Grandma tells about bread,
when black showed up they would cut if off.
Then to the toaster it would go,
or peanut butter with jelly to be smeared on.
Grandpa tells about cottage cheese,
and how it would wear a green coat of fur.
He said when this would happen,
the cottage cheese needed to be thrown out.
Grandpa tells about cheese,
and how it would wear a blue coat of fur.
He said they would cut the blue coat of fur off,
then the cheese was ready for his sandwich.
Now we have bar codes on everything,
from food to toothpaste to medicines.
Now if out of date,
one must throw it out.
I asked my grandparents,
how did you survive?
They said,
common sense my child.

Nobody trusts their nose anymore. Mind you, nobody cooks anymore either.

This was a great look back . It reminded me of my grandparents. Everything was done in a different procedure back then.

Great to see you and thanks for your good luck. You are so right when you say, folks back then were a lot wiser than we are today. Grandparents had common sense to live on. From Crete??? Guess you are vacation. If yes, then have a ton of fun.... Enjoy your spring day writing away..................

This difference I can sense so well. Earlier, there was no expiry date on parceled or canned food items. Our grandparents used them until they found them mouldy or rotten. Now even if the item looks usable, my husband throws it away, if it has crossed the expiry date and I greatly object it. Quite interesting entry dear Paula.

Great to see you. Glad you found my fun yet true write to be Quite interesting. Our grandparents ate everything & they had common sense to live on. Many foods do go bad. Each one needs to know if good or bad before eating... Enjoy your spring day writing away..................

Whoa! Just a minute here! These are fascinating stories. But if the cheese is blue or green on its border, you gotta throw it all out. If you ever tried to eat the 'good part,' you'd know exactly what I mean. You can't just cut the blue or green part off and eat the rest... Grrrrrrrr.

Great to see you. Glad you enjoyed my fun yet true write. Grandparents ate everything & they lived. Oh yes, they cut the fur off the bread & cheese. Could it be the stores want to sell more???? Many foods do go bad. Each one needs to know if good or bad before eating... Enjoy your spring day writing away..................

true words, Paula. Then, life was simpler, and we had to use common sense. So well said through your story and your own personal experiences. I appreciate the reflective, in depth nature of your words. Best wishes with the contest, dear Paula. Have a great evening, sara

Paula, Your poem beautifully explores the profound juxtaposition between the purity and ease of childhood in contrast with the intricate and arduous realities of adulthood. It delves into the poignant themes of lost innocence and the myriad challenges that accompany the process of maturing. BOL with the contest
