I've been an Elementary School, High School, Sunday School teacher over the last 60+ years.I've coached football, basketball, baseball, softball, golf, tennis, and running (cross country, track and marathon).  I taught students and /or employees, in sales, management, accounting, public speaking, World History, Psychology, Sociology, Personal Responsibility, Accounting, Speech, Special Education, Travel Occupations, Health and Nutrition, Physical Education, Science and all courses in Math on the High School level.

The most important thing I've ever taught was Personal Responsibilty and in my humble opinion, the right way to teach is to teach the process of learning.  When taught correctly, a stident can then become a lifetime learner and teach themselves anything they want to learn.

This is where my short verse came from.

Teach them how to discern and learn, Don’t leave them helpless to crash and burn. Teaching them just content, they learn it your way. Teach them the process of learning today, You give them a lifetime of learning every day.

The process of learning is more important than the actual content. You nailed it!

This is what we are lacking "Teach them the process of learning today," - this is the ULTIMATE thing to TEACH!

Amen! I've been saying that for years. Only a few listened while I was still teaching in public schools. Thanks for reading and commenting my friend. Always good to see your visit. Have a happy-go-lucky day! Bill

Superb philosophy, superbly delivered, Bill. Couldn't agree with you more. A fellow teacher, but only 30 years worth (@ up to 38 hours a week in the classroom, however -- the life of a non-certified private school teacher + adjunct faculty scrub). Cheers, Gershon

Thank you for your support of my thoughts on teaching. I familiar with Church schools and adjunct faculty situations. My public-school teaching was only 20years of my teaching experience, later in life. Corporate training and coaching were additional years, and teaching Bible classes made up the majority of the other years of teaching experience. Being a parent of a son and 2 daughters gave me additional experience among other things. The mention of my teaching experience was primarily to let the readers know I didn't just decide this was how it should be done. A great deal of trial and error were involved in my own process of learning about teaching, and thus my philosophy about teaching. Thanks for reading and commenting on my thoughts and poetry my friend, Bill

I always thought coaching was going to be so purposeful, but the classroom and sponsoring different clubs and activities turned out to be just as gratifying. Thank for the comment, and for your service to mankind through teaching. Bill

ah, a lifetime of learning. Well said. Life is a "process" for sure. As teachers we understood that content is one thing, process is another. The process helps us all throughout out lives. The process allows us to see through the illusion and the propaganda to be authentic, not just robots.

Good Morning Bill - Not that I pay attention to the comments of others because I like to have my own however I agree with Debra because her comment was right there for me to see. You have quite the resume filled with substance. I believe in the concept of personal responsibility because responsibility is what makes us learn and remember not to mention aids us in getting through life. Your entry is clear and coherent.
