Sweet Revenge Discussed

A vengeful eye for an eye but mind you, to avenge yourself ain't easy as apple pie Indeed a punch for a punch or invite your foe for a delicious malicious lunch to dish out nasty retribution, yet revenge is a dish best served cold! But a tooth for a tooth will it actually soothe? A horrid scowl for an irate pout you scream coz she did shout! Ah, that biting desire for sweet revenge On the mind it can bitterly scavenge! Sweet it might seem, sweet at first feel but it's really more sour than an orange peel. Then there's the danger of meting out in excess There's a need to don self-control's harness. One may try to spread retaliation evenly on the slice of his arch enemy Rat-a-tat tat on his door for some payback tit for tat? To chuck out all plots and thoughts of seething revenge poses for man at times the greatest challenge. Is it then so natural for this human brat to cherish and relish a tit for tat? But if so many of your chores complain of your negligence you might as well put off too, all desire for vengeance. Any wish for poetic justice, spit it out in poetry Harbor no yearnings for getting even except maybe in virtual reality. Ah, alas as Jesus's humble way to offer the other cheek is for ordinary man perhaps a task too docile and meek.

The account is always too short when it comes to revenge. Yes Jesus had the answer. But better than that, with faith. The Lord saith Vengence is mine.

Forgiveness is elusive to some, and revenge eats at the soul. When I harbor vengeful thoughts I try to convince myself that I am only lowered by them. It doesn't always work. :). They say, "What goes around, comes around." Nicely written Zaynab.

It's so easy for most to turn the cheek, but if they ever listen to the real-life stories, they will understand more. "Ala Kachuu" - Take and Run-a Short Live action film Sezim, 19 years old wants to fulfill her dream of studying in Kyrgyz capital She gets taken to hinterland She’s forced to marry a stranger If she refuses marriage she's threatened with social stigmatization and exclusion Torn between her desire for freedom and the constraint of Kyrgyz culture desperately seeks a way out

I know, and I also know that Muhammad's mother's name is Fatima. Most people do not know anything about your religion, they will now. My Lady I did mention Islam in my "The World Religions" poem 4/6/22 Islam Allah—The One and only God—Allah is good Muslims worship the God of Noah, Abraham, Moses, David and Jesus - peace be upon them all. However, it is certainly true that Jews, Christians and Muslims all have different concepts of Almighty God

Forced marriage is totally unislamic and prohibited in our religion yet its sad if some cultures still continue to practice it . In our large muslim community here where i live forced marriage is unheard of and many marriages are happy , done the Islamic way i.e without premarital fornication .

A good rhyme scheme, I think we must rise above the base instincts, if we are able and at least try to turn the other cheek before other ways. An interesting perspective.

Yeah turning the other cheek for a mere slap is not that hard always but this can not apply to a murder of your loved one. Its too hard to forgive killers and if left unpunished they're bound to kill again. Thanks so much for fine comment,

AN EYE FOR AN EYE AND A TOOTH FOR A TOOTH I WOULD AGREE TO IF FAMILY HAS TO BE AVENGED BECAUSE OF MURDER. TO TURN THE OTHER CHEEK, IS A LOT TO TAKE IN, BUT WE ARE MEANT TO FORGIVE- BUT CAN YOU FORGIVE YOUR DAUGHTERS MURDERER? Sorry about caps too tired to change - apologies Zaynab. Hugs blessings, Jennifer.

Indeed you are ao right and fair in saying that your child's killer can't just be forgiven amd given the other cheek to continue his killings. That's why my poem is not against all revenge. Warm thanks for great comment,

Yeah the advice is good but he meant it for a mere slap only, im sure he didn't mean it for killers, killers just can't be allowed or forgiven to kill more. Thanks for comment,

A very thoughtful poem, S.zaynab. In seeking revenge, one places the act of forgiveness on the "revengee." Seems somewhat unfair, yet it offers that person an opportunity to feel good (and look good) ~ not what revenger had in mind, I imagine.

Understandable, though just being slapped could be forgiven but if one is stabbed then the stabber needs to be punished by law enforcement. Thanks so much for the comment,

We humans do possess some very unattractive traits S.zaynab! It does take strength not to give in the base instincts and to evolve into something more beautiful! Well done on your thoughtful piece! Happy Tuesday !!!

Yeah we inherit or adopt bad traits though criminals need to see justice so not all revenge is wrong. Thanks so much for your thoughts,

Interesting how we get to offering the other cheek; tho in Old Testament we do see God advising all kinds of revenge - rather nasty. Yuk! I don't believe any of this (I don't believe in God or gods, anyway), but it's rather interesting (as your poem is, by the way). So much biblical stuff can, of course, be fascinating, but just be careful what you believe. Again, thanks for that poem. I enjoyed it.

Um you know i didn't know that eye for an eye was in the bible until i read the comments, i thought it was an English saying . My poem was more on man's tendencies than religion this time. Um well we believe that scripture prior to our latest has been fabricated and that's why the violence in it is unseasonably savage and brutal and God couldn't allow or command such cruel violence. Thanks soo much for a super comment,

Revenge is a temptation, but accomplishes little; the short-lived satisfaction of evening the score yields to guilt and fear of retribution. It always escalates until violence is inevitable. How admirable are the leaders who changed history with their non-violence: Jesus, Ghandi, Martin Luther King Jr., Nelson Mandela. IMHO meekness is not a weakness, it is courage and conviction combined with self-control. Thank you for posting this and letting the discussion flow forth ~ John

well yeah not vigilante individual revenge, but rather punishment by authorities yes to avenge. Um well though christians now may interpret Jesus's sword saying to other meanings but he did mean violent punishment as he also said to 'bring the heretics and kill them before me' in bible and christians later did kill many many jews very brutally, christians warred and killed to build empires too.

S, thanks for your reply. Yes, the Bible does speak of 'life for life', but not in the context of vigilante revenge, it is in the context of justice, administered by the authorities. And Jesus saying "I came not to bring peace but a sword" is understood in Christian teaching to mean his message was going to bring division, conflict, and even the death sentence to his followers. But he never used nor taught violence and even rebuked his disciple for cutting off the ear of the high priest's servant at the time of his arrest. I appreciate your openness to discuss!

Yeah true yet Jesus did say in bible that he came with a sword, the bibke states 'life for life' and all the other prophets before him had to kill enemies or they'd be wiped out before the divine messge was complete . Our holy prophet did encourage forgiveness and clemency too. Thanks soo much for a great comment,

Really liked your poetry, S. zaynab. Great informations on things to consider before exacting revenge. IMHO if you feel you have to be right, you're probably too narrow minded to make it a win win situation. A poet friend in Texas, Bill

Without revenge some people may feel they will have an easy time of walking all over us, I’m agnostic myself so don’t feel bound by religious texts, I believe in standing my ground Zaynab, but besides all that, you have written a superb unique thought provoking poem, cheers David

A worthy poem but I can't agree with your last couplet-- turning one's cheek is a very hard thing to do-- like giving your life for those who might not appreciate it, as Jesus did knowingly. I once thought he wanted us to forgive for the wrongdoer's sake but it's for OUR sake Jesus said to forgive as I learned when I forgave my brother for cheating me out of a lot of money (even committing a felony to do so):the bad dreams stopped, my heart felt lighter, and my soul was finally free of hatred.

Um like i meant once you are slapped say on one cheek its very very hard for many people to give the other cheek for further slaps so just forgiving is easier compared to that but still not easy for everyone. So,that you felt lighter and free of hatred is a story that yes ought to inspire towards faster forgiveness but you can't say giving the other cheek for slaps is easy as pie for everyone . Thanks for relating comment!

Life is not easy. We run into situations where we want to pay the other person back for what he/she has done. Alas, I don't think that ever works. In the movie, "Something To Talk About", the older woman gave her a recipe to serve her husband that wasn't lethal but just a little reminder if you do me wrong, you get your just desserts. I haven't or would not do that, but it was funny until he got very sick. Thanks for the creative write about revenge. Revenge always has its equal reward unless the person dies. SK

If a member of my family was ever murdered, God forgive me, i could never turn the other cheek and my instinct would be revenge, how, where not sure But I would know why. Good one Zaynab, sometimes a tooth for a tooth from the old testament sounds good. Hugs and blessings, Great poem and thought provoking. Jennifer. jennifer.

Jennifer, Some things in life have to work themselves out to ever reach the point of forgiveness. We forgive someone for ourselves and not the other person. We have to forgive so that we can stop hurting our bodies with bad emotions. I understand exactly what you are saying here. Sara
