Sky Garden 1969

Inspired by the enormous lithograph (a feat in itself) by Robert Rauschenberg, entitled Sky Garden (Stoned Moon), 1969. The Stoned Moon series was created after a tour of NASA facilities and discussions of space travel at that time in history with the artist. The images very much show interconnectedness of nature, mankind, and scientific and technological achievements of the space program. My poem will be best read in conjunction with viewing the artwork - Sky Garden 1969. Breathing in the air of possibility Sparking thoughts interstellar Excitement reigns As something big is created Here within and there without Without boundaries to blot thinking Within reach, the highest heights The breath taken into my lungs Air filled with ideas, brought to mind Whole body trembling with what might be Flashes of colour, eclipsed by ideas Man versus machine versus meaning Explanation, exploration, extrapolation From belly of the Beast to unknown dreamscapes As I and others clamber ceaselessly skywards Do I need to stop and think? I'm lost in the enormity of the vision Both mine and that of the skies Take me, whatever is there, I give myself to it No trepidation tempts me to safer terrain Everything about me now sky high I may never come back down to Earth

Rauschenberg was inspired from a trip to Cape Canaveral, Florida, to witness the launch of the Apollo 11 mission. Myself, I was disappointingly inspired by googling lithographs following a previous ekphrasis on Munch's The Brooch and wanting to explore more of that style whilst doing an art course on printing myself :) thanks for you kind comments, much appreciated

Thank you! It's interesting because it's huge but it drew my attention because it's like flashes of imagery that seem to overlaid onto humanity. Very different!

The piece reflects the timelessness, the infinity of the universe. Your awe at the enormity of creation is well expressed in this poetic ekphrasis. Well done!

I love this D D. I went away to read up on the artist and his work having read your ekphrasis. Rauschenberg's work captures the sense of wonder and apprehension that the world must have felt at the time. Poetry Soup offers the ability to add an image to your work so it may be worth contemplating doing so if only to add more depth to (what is already) an exceptional poem. Cheers - Gary
