Sky Garden 1969
Inspired by the enormous lithograph (a feat in itself) by
Robert Rauschenberg, entitled Sky Garden (Stoned Moon), 1969. The Stoned Moon series was created after a tour of NASA facilities and discussions of space travel at that time in history with the artist. The images very much show interconnectedness of nature, mankind, and scientific and technological achievements of the space program.
My poem will be best read in conjunction with viewing the artwork - Sky Garden 1969.
Breathing in the air of possibility
Sparking thoughts interstellar
Excitement reigns
As something big is created
Here within and there without
Without boundaries to blot thinking
Within reach, the highest heights
The breath taken into my lungs
Air filled with ideas, brought to mind
Whole body trembling with what might be
Flashes of colour, eclipsed by ideas
Man versus machine versus meaning
Explanation, exploration, extrapolation
From belly of the Beast to unknown dreamscapes
As I and others clamber ceaselessly skywards
Do I need to stop and think?
I'm lost in the enormity of the vision
Both mine and that of the skies
Take me, whatever is there, I give myself to it
No trepidation tempts me to safer terrain
Everything about me now sky high
I may never come back down to Earth
