“Now, therefore, I do recommend and assign Thursday, the 26th day of November next, to be devoted by the people of these States to the service of that great and glorious Being who is the beneficent author of all the good that was, that is, or that will be." –George Washington's Thanksgiving Proclamation, October 3, 1789.

I stood in my kitchen suddenly aware. A feeling slowly washes over me, like the November sunbeams gently warming my skin. Gratitude passes through me like the clouds of mood, like rain turning to sleet, like the grey skies turning to blue. Gratefulness stays as I remember it holding my trembling hand beneath the hospital sheet, counting each breath. I recall it was my joyful childhood cocoon of innocence. It was also the warm, comforting embrace of memories galore as I stood at my father’s grave, overcome with grief. It was the flowing energy that propelled me through my college years and, later, my career. It filled my heart with joy the day I stood before the altar and said, “I do.” It has been with me with every opportunity, every disappointment, and every failure, filling my heart with hope. Gratitude is my faithful companion, following me wherever I go like a glimmer within my heart that promises never to leave. I begin and end each new day embracing it, proclaiming its power and glorious presence.
gratitude is memory stored in the heart making sense of the past focusing on the here and now creating a vision for tomorrows bringing peace to one’s soul

A grateful heart is a joyful heart. When we get many things we long for and lead relatively a carefree life, we fail to be grateful. I always note that you have an attitude of gratitude. Beginning and closing the day with a thankful heart is the best, one can possibly do. Only a person who can count his/her blessings will be able to stay grateful. Along with that, such a person will have compassion for the less fortunate. Really enjoyed your small poem at the end. Stay blessed dear Sara

thank you, kind Valsa, for your visit and for sharing your thoughts and wisdom about a grateful heart. I agree..beginning and ending a day with a thankful heart puts the soul at rest and creates a gracious, grateful spirit. Thank you for seeing me as a person with gratitude. That means a lot...I see you as that way as well. You're a gentle, poetic spirit. Have a blessed day, Sara

Great Thanksgiving poem. I have lived long enough to know, I should not, could not have lived this long reasonably healthy and well fed were it not for the grace of God. Happy Thanksgiving my friend.

I share your sentiments, Joe. "There but for the grace of God go I" is something I routinely say to myself. Have a blessed Thanksgiving, Joe. Grateful for you, Sara

Dear Sara, your creative poem strikes a deep chord within me. The difficult process of recalling the numerous benefits placed upon us constitutes a challenging undertaking, while the proclivity to succumb to small grievances stays alarmingly easy. On this important occasion of Thanksgiving, I implore you to bask in the magnificence of the day and fully embrace its ecstasy.

Your comments touched me, dear Sotto. I'm grateful my words struck a chord with you. Sometimes recalling the benefits of one's life is challenging. I have to work at not succumbing to grievances large and small...it's so easy sometimes. I appreciate you sharing and for your Thanksgiving Day wishes. May you have a splendid Thanksgiving, your poetess friend and 'fan,' Sara :-)
