Poverty - Potw

"living in a man-made island, with blinded eyes, and unfeeling heart" (Quote By Poet) What do we know about poverty, What do we understand about suffering… It’s a miracle that we were born into families who had enough food to eat and share, celebrate festivals lavishly with gifts and delicacies, Enough space to live, and comfortably too! Enough clothes to protect from ravages of weather! What if we didn’t! Born in a non-affluent country, I have seen the down-trodden, I have seen people begging, starving, Living in the most miserable conditions… I have also seen the opposite... People flaunting their expensive clothes, jewellery, houses and cars, without slightest remorse or feelings of pain! Poverty is a curse, but Being super-wealthy might be a curse too! It’s like living in a man-made island, with blinded eyes, and unfeeling heart, surrounded by walls of cruelty, and insensitivity! Dear Anaya, Thank you for reading my poem. Your comments are always thought-provoking, especially about the injustices we see in our society. My poem is mostly the questions I ponder, which troubles me, when I visit the country I was born. The country is making a lot of progress - economically, scientifically, technologically; but a vast difference between the living conditions of rich and poor, is not going away. That really bothers me. I feel calmer by sharing some of my thoughts. Love ~ Mala

"Radix malorum est cupiditas" ..or the love of money is the root of all evil. I believe all that's been said in the comments. The divide between rich and poor is by design. Great write. Cheers - Gary

Your poem speaks volumes Mala, about the great divide between rich and poor, it’s been around since ancient civilisations, and to be honest I believe it’s by design and forced ignorance rather than luck, congratulations on a thought provoking POTW, cheers David

Dear David, Really appreciate your insightful comment. You are very right - it's not luck that some people have too much, and some other people are starving. To me, it is caused by design, and some people's inability to share. I don't have the deep knowledge of an economist to analyze, and truly understand the real cause, I just feel sad, and the inclination to express my thoughts. BW ~ Mala

WoW! Malabika, You have penned such a well written, deep and thought provoking write on topic of poverty. It saddens me to see people in poverty. We as nation should do more to help people in this state, myself included. Congratulations on your win in the contest and for getting the poem of week. Have a nice day-Alexis

Dear Alexis, So happy to receive your insightful and inspiring comment. I am sure, we all feel sad to see the unfairness and injustice inflicted, but we are not the policy-makers, we are not the politicians, we are not even the economists who are able to analyze the situation. Thank you so much. We are at least pondering, and asking questions. BW ~ Mala

Dear Malabika, your thoughts pull at the heartstrings and there's so much truth within. So heartbreaking to see those living without and struggling. It's also troubling to watch those that have it all, share no compassion or guidance. So sad, indeed. This is tender and emotional, all at the same time. Congratulations on Poem of the Week. Many wonderful blessings to you. Hugs, Brandy

Dear Brandy, you have said it all! There shouldn't be anyone suffering without food, without basic necessities, without health services - in the present world. Basic amenities could be available to all if resources are distributed in a fair manner. Some people may wear brand-name clothes, or drive a luxury car - who cares! Really appreciate your thoughtful comment, feel honoured. Hugs ~ Mala

Well said Mala and congratulations on receiving the honour of poem of the week. Things are getting worse here day by day, every time one shops the prices have gone up. The wealthy have no idea how hard it can be for those living in poverty… Belle

Dear Mala, I think being super rich and not sharing with the poor is a curse, like you suggest in your wonderful poem. Most of us, I suppose, haven't witnessed poverty except on TV. It's children with nothing to eat, elderly with no heat or running water--things we take for granted. Thank you for writing about it. And Congratulations! :)

Thank you, Dear Ann, for reading my poem, and commenting with such thoughtful words. I often wonder how some super-rich people in the midst of extreme poverty, feel about the world they have no idea about! Hope we can create some awareness with our writings. Love and BW ~ Mala
