Popeye the Sailor Man
sure could pop spinach out of a can.
Strength and pep he would gain.
Might we say spinach was his cocaine?

Nice one ! Hi Andrea, I couldn’t find your blog, so I am making this comment here : to refer to a poetic form as an Asian form is considered racist. Please could you specify what exact form you are referring to in your current contest description. Best intentions.x. Asia refers to a geographical region & not a poetic form. Best intentions.x.

Yes. I googled again Asian poetry. It lists around ten forms, so it is a "thing" and not racist at all.

If you google Asian poetry forms , you WILL get a list of what they are. I believe I said short Asian poetry forms. Something like that. Most people at Soup take that to mean tanka, haiku, senryu, sijo. Forms 5 lines and under. These are the short Asian forms more typically used and understood by those who sponsor contests here. Hope that explains it.

The more he eats the less left for me. I do not like spinach. Nice entry for the contest, Andrea. Good luck, my friend. Bill

Spinach for him was far more unrealistic though.

Oh, this certainly brings back memories. I think I can credit Popeye for making spinach my favourite vegetable. Not to cocaine levels, of course, but who doesn't want to be super strong? Thanks for writing this gem!

I thought spinach was a horrible veggie because my mother only used it from the can. I did not even realize it was similar to lettuce! Then later in life I learned it tasted great just in a salad eaten raw!

Hmmmm... I'd written 3 Soupmails to you yesterday, 2 to Kim today. Go figure! I think I'll need to reboard "the good ship lollipop. I think last time I'd been thrown overboard, could ask fPopeye to save me. However, he's always busy helping Olive Oil

I think I got at least two of them and replied to one. Didn't you get my reply?

It will surprise you to know that in Malta, we have a small village dedicated to Popeye. Very popular.

I was such a silly kid, I actually had a crush on this cartoon character, along with Mighty Mouse.

Hello Andrea, I simply adore this oh so charming piece. Superb rhythm and flow. Thanks for your comment on my poem and for the time you spent searching for a work of mine you hadn’t read. Howard

Yes, but thank goodness it didn't cost like cocaine or he could never have bought all those hamburgers for what's his name, and Olive Oil's weight, well, she definitely could've been a snorter. (does this count as gossip?) I really, really, like this your Popeye the Sailor Man. Soupy. Love, CayCay
