" Exult O shores, and ring O bells! But I with mournful tread, Walk the deck my Captain lies, Fallen cold and dead."(Final lines from Walt Whitman's "O Captain My Captain")
My hero, oh how wonderful it would have been to know you personally, to have spent time with you, especially since I learned the way you were back then both as a child, then as a man – so strong, so wise, so true! The way you’ve been described, you had a gangly look - not a handsome lad, but oh, you were so bright! You were poor, but you did all you could just to find a book, one you might savor late into the night. I relate to how you had a very human side; to the way you loved to play a prank or talk jokingly. You never were unkind, and you had no worldly pride. Preferring friends to chores, you also loved poetry! What other man born in a cabin would rise up and accomplish so much? Predestined for greatness, you had inside you the desire to be better! When you realized that your country boy dialect was such a hindrance, you taught yourself proper English to climb higher! You were so very good, and your soul so godly old! Once in New Orleans you witnessed the African's sad plight - men and women chained like animals were being sold. All you saw, felt and heard determined you'd fight for the right! You had no religion, Honest Abe, but you looked to God! Freeing slaves, you also would have fought for women’s freedom too. A melancholy man at times, and maybe a bit odd, “ O Captain, my Captain,” poets ever more will praise you. For "To Honor My Hero" Poetry Contest Sponsor: Anoucheka Gangabissoon

Andrea, congratulations for your win! I remember reading this and thought I had commented. I love the integration of Whitman's poem and your eloquent words for Abraham Lincoln. Isn't it interesting that Abe, like Abraham, led his people to a new land and a new understanding of man! Wonderfully done in your delightful poetic style my friend.

In Lincoln’s poem “My Childhood Home I see again” where he says “O Memory! thou midway world 'Twixt earth and paradise, Where things decayed and loved ones lost In dreamy shadows rise,” those lines, the entire poem actually, show his sensitive nature not many know of. You and I have studied this gracious soul and we know. I love your tribute to him Andrea. Congratulations on your win. Blessings xxoo

You write so admiringly of a very admirable man (my favorite president too). He stood tall at our nation's lowest point, and shone the light during our darkest hour. Beautifully done, my friend. Big congrats.

Abe is an inspiration to many and he has been one of my inspirations! So I made a pilgrimage to Lincoln Memorial when I went to Washington!! I have read about his life and watched the movie! Thanks for this lovely write and Congrats! He was also a poet, and had good humour “ How long are your legs, Sir?” “They are long enough to reach the earth!!”

Abe was an Aquarius. They are for the good of all people. So that was his cause in life. Hey, but, this is a great write :)

Your poem exceeded my 8 line attention span (it's not you, it's the adhd) so I didnt finish it but I will say it got off to a phenomenal start. I regret not being able to read your wonderful lines about log cabins and new orleans, persistence, and integrity. Perhaps another time. More importantly, I've been on Soup for almost a year now and I'm pretty sure you've had the same profile pic throughout. Time to mix it up, Dietrich!

Andrea, I think your tribute to a man I also hold in high esteem, is a fine look into his character and attributes. His melancholy moments are what made him love poetry and be able to write it, in my opinion. A great entry! Best of luck in the contest. 7 ; )
