My Nineteen-Seventies

I was newly thirteen when the seventies took me underwing, then married and grown when they creased inside time’s fold. I was not attracted to those scholastic or athletic, but to those lacking labels and considered rebels. Moving yearly filled my army-brat life with sad good-byes that swerved my teenage years thru countless, deep cries. When the decade first began, I had paper and pen in hand to secretly write the poetry holding my heart slams. At thirteen, poems first bubbled in me to be pen-freed. I still have most as lost-girl written within my teen season. In the seventies I fell in love with love, astrology, spirituality, Kahlil Gibran, Thoreau, individuality as resonated in me from Ann Rand’s, “The Fountainhead”, and lyrics on which I fed. The Who wrote song lines I fantasized were mine, all mine, Elton John, Crosby, Stills and Nash sang words for my thrills, as did Neil Young, Carole King, CCR, The Eagles, and Beatles. Rock n Roll beats and crying guitars inebriated my limits, such music moved me in defiance of compliance to physics. Thru rock’s depths and denim, I was a seventies thoroughbred who has poetically wept since first the decade's innocence bled.

A brilliant attempt to encapsulate in such few words what the seventies meant to you! Wonderful! I wasn't able to do that, CayCay, with my poem. It was too difficult to cut it off. I remember those times very clearly and I am not nearly as young but I am sure happier now. I hope you are too. I miss you. I borrowed my daughter's computer to post this. I can't read or comment at PS now because of the ads. I only have my Kindle that used to work fine until the ads. Email me. Love, Connie

Ah the 70's. I am the same age as you. I think Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin stirred my raucousness and independence. The world was changing so fast. Ideas, life styles, society in general...strange times indeed but I am certainly glad we were there to see them and survive them. They shaped our lives. Great poem! I could go on and on about the 70's. In those days, song lyrics were my literature. I still read them today even though I know them all by heart.

Oh, Daniel - you definitely understand why it was so hard to abbreviate the meaning of the 70s in our lives, had a real hard time with that. Like you, I could talk about that decade without ceasing! So good to have you on this page, thanks ... CayCay

Wow Cay Cay, congrats on a fine win with this gem. It was like a stroll down memory lane for me also. Loved your musical tastes, except for the WHO I'm with ya.

Wow...love this CayCay...It's brilliant! I love Rand's book 'Atlas Shrugged'. One of my all time faves. If you haven't read it, please do. Who is John Galt?

After Fountainhead, I did read Atlas Shrugged. I was a teen when I got into Ann Rand who pushed my individuality button that I didn't know existed or had yet to realize, maybe both. She and Thoreau both took me to me and my love of 'authenticity.' sent u a message. Thank you, dear Rhoda, for such glowing / personalized comments - love them. Poetry hugs ... CayCay

Such a great poem about your life during these times, CayCay. It was nice to learn more about you and that you were a born poet like myself, writing so very early in life. Congrats on your win! Hugs, Sandra

wow, Caycay, your seventies were more profound than mine were. I did not even really write poetry until 2000. I was more interested in dating and seeing Spain and finishing college during this time. The marriage and the kids just "happened" and I would like to have prepared myself better and been more "aware" of who I was, as you were doing in that decade. I am sure this must have placed high. Congrats!

Nostalgia from this poem gripped me right away so I captured it so I can re-read it whenever I want to return to the 70's which is actually pretty often, being a Hippie and all.

Motown had its time and place in my 'lyric' world, but I admit to being nervous about Barry White's baby making voice. It is a shame that so many great artists from that label did not own the rights to the songs they gifted to us. Glad you didn't ask me about rap! All the best ... CayCay

CayCay, I enjoyed your soulful nostalgia of the 70's that lends beautiful insight into who you were then and who you are now through your emotional and musical references. Your last two lines wonderfully reveal how vital your poetry was and still is to you personally and artistically. A great write of your (poetic and personal) coming of age. Congratulations on your excellent win with your captivating poem. Warmest wishes. ~Susan

It was difficult to sum up the 70s especially for a Libra, ha! Seriously, it was THE significant decade in my development as those teen to grown years are for anyone so I did have a difficult time deciding on content. Good to see you and many thanks ... CayCay

Here I am, happily on Soup while downstairs family is waiting for the breakfast I should now do. No, Soup guilt with our bacon though. It is so hard to get off here sometimes! I cried over Lennon, Tom Petty and sometimes when I see how old a faved rocker is now, I turn misty. Never thought Keith Richards would still be here, he always appeared dead already. Thanks for coming by. Poetry hugs ... CayCay

Though I love the early BeeGees, I never developed an appreciation for disco or rap when it came around, lost my vinyl but recovered favs on CDs (or DVDs - can't keep that straight.) It is good to see you, I hope the tax season isn't too brutal on your hours. And, all the best to you, as well ... CayCay

Yes, in hindsight 22 is very young, I divorced him at age 27 because he'd fallen in love with another I couldn't fight - a powder white. Glad you found bits of yourself and some 'great' lines (no pun intended with the white). All the best ... CayCay
