Listen To The Warm

years fly quickly by
and the length of time unknown
listen to the warm
I was sixteen, and he was eighteen;
just high school sweethearts, we fell in love.
From that time on, we two were one in all we did
and shared the dreams we followed.
By mid-twenties, our three babies were born,
and the sweet warmth of parenthood filled our hearts
as we shared in raising our family.
All too soon, an empty nest, and just the two us.
Now, here we are, fifty-eight years later...
since our blessed wedding day in nineteen fifty-eight.
As we hold hands, we are thankful that the stretch of time
has aged us in ways that were gentle and kind.
I am so grateful for our forever love,
our quiet days, our summer evenings by the pool
or by the fire in the cold of winter while the snow is falling,
he beside me reading and I writing; the loving glances,
then lying together in the darkness through the night...
together, still listening to the warm.
