Legacy of Poetry In Lyrics
Legacy in the Poetry of Lyrics
Cold snow filled December day named thirteen
Heard the first notes of your lyric legacy,
Left handed December child of beguiling mischief,
Exploding in advent of an undiscovered melodic tone poem
Sometimes dark as winter thunder struggle
Thrashing on the ocean of mourning and compulsive meter -
A soliloquy of west side stories shouted over inner demons -
Then in conversion modulating to an ode of selfless chorus,
Selfless melody of rhythms and of rhymes,
Epic verses – a mission to wrap the earth in ribbons of melody
Stanzas sung by all the birds of the forest –
Invited - chanted in lists of litany
Over poetic prairies and mountain lentos
Assonance and alliteration gaze tenderly
As the rhythmic heartbeat diminishes in each line
Then stops!
Elegy of a thousand voices
Rises to mourn then celebrate legacy emptied out
Ever to be recited in plain chant and aria – freely given
As the love poem recited by embracing open eternal arms.
In memory of Dr. L. Scott Martin – my vocal coach extraordinaire of 20+ years, my colleague and my friend who saved my voice after two vocal surgeries. He never turned away any earnest student. His life was a poem – a lament and a song of praise. His legacy lives in the hundreds of voices he trained who continue his poem and his song.
