In the Elevator
When I let one loose in the elevator,
it wriggled and slithered and hissed and seemed
to eye the passengers’ pantyhosed legs.
It climbed up one’s heal, bore fangs. She screamed.
I grabbed it from the screamer’s ankle
And said, “No fear! Just Simon the snake!
He’s only come for April Fool’s Day.
Now see this on-off switch. He’s fake!”
