Notes About The Poem

"Three Options" Poetry Contest (Ten lines, Ten syllables in each)

Sponsor: Constance La France

Poet's Notes:

KALIDASA was a classical Sanskrit poet who is often considered as ancient India's greatest poet and playright.

VALMIKI was a legendary poet who is celebrated as the traditional author of the epic Ramayana, based on the attribution in the text itself. He is revered as Adi Kavi, the first poet, author of Ramayana, the first epic poem. The Ramayana, originally written by Valmiki, consists of 24,000 shlokas and seven cantos.Wikipedia

Idyllic

Appears a mysterious land from far,
Dream of vermilion sky at mystic dawn
Prayers heard from boats on holy river,
Mythical chants floating in consciousness.
My birthplace - ancient city reminding
Of vedas and epics, saints and hermits,
A land of literature, poetry,
Music, art, picturesque architecture...
For thousands of years verses flow in air
land of Kalidasa and Valmiki.

Dear Mala, Calcutta, your native city is also famous as the place of birth of Tagore, the one who received the first nobel prize for Literature from India. Our land has a rich culture and heritage and is blessed with great epics and epic writers. In this idyllic setting, there was peace and worship and the atmosphere was resonant with songs and hymns. Beautiful poem. Congratulations on your great win.

Dear Valsa, it's such a great pleasure reading your wise and uplifting comments. Yes, my birthplace Kolkata is a great city, vibrant with cultural activities. Rabindranath Tagore's songs and writings had a huge impact on me from childhood. In this poem, the picture which appeared in my mind, is Benares, which I haven't visited, but the scene of boats in the Ganges, and the atmosphere of chanting hymns I often ponder about. Thank you for your wonderfully written appreciative comment. This is the blessing I mostly value being a member of this gifted community. Love and best wishes

True Seeker, feel nostalgic at times. I wish I could read Sanskrit well, and read Kalidasa. My mother picked my name from one of his epics. Reading Kabir would be great too! Thank you for reading my poem, really appreciate your encouraging comment.
