Hold Your Head High

keep dwelling in the clouds, my mentor said
and shun those who would drag you through the mud
their heinous wish to keep you seeing red
is Satan's lure for drawing out first-blood

for in this world malevolence abounds
and evil lurks in every corner nook
to tit for tat in idle chat with clowns
is like a fish who can't resist the hook

but in the sky there's love and harmony
you'll find yourself immersed in dreams of peace
I'll help you in your quest to stay angst-free
together we'll find joy and sweet release

forever may this be my firm resolve
to rise above the fray and thus evolve

*inspired by a friend

What a great message Tom. It is very difficult to not engage in disagreements especially when you know you are right. Some people are so rude to attack and it really takes a deep christian understanding to handle this situation right like you have written about. Christ like response is the only way because our Lord said so. Forgiveness afterwards is is the healing balm for our souls not to harbor their hate toward us but releasing it to God who rewards us with inner peace. This is amazing

Hey Tommy I’ve taken your advice and I’m back! Student is at work studying here - this is another beautiful sonnet and what an uplifting read it is! Again, being a ‘rhymer’ I appreciate the wonderful flowing rhymes here that you pen so skilfully. The volta is perfectly placed and I love the inspiration of positivity and support it brings. I also like how you have chosen to separate the quatrains as it gives the reader time to appreciate each one. The couplet summarises the poem wonderfully.

Probably my best is The Abyss. It was printed in the Society of classical literature magazine. However, Mark Massey is probably the best sonneteer on PS. Check him out too

I’m reading it aloud as it’s the stresses that I’m struggling with - the rest is more natural to me but I’m finding it hard with the iambic ! Thank you again. Loved this one :)

Beautiful words with inspired thoughts! Temperance is one of the fruits of the Spirit most find difficult to show. Our flesh loves a good knock down, drag out huh? Loved this.

Yeah I've got about a half dozen or so here who love to "push my buttons," but a good friend keeps admonishing me to ignore them and stay in the clouds. Sometimes I fail ..

Dear Tom, This is a good one and a motivational for all, "to rise above the fray". Thanks for clarifying what you meant on my poem earlier. I assumed you meant a cat. Sorry, I think I get up too early some days. Have a blessed evening.

I really respect your determination to rise above the fray in a non aggressive way. By keeping our minds on spiritual goals, as Jesus did. His words to Peter:" Put away your sword, for those that live by the sword, will die by the sword... " as far as it is possible, be peaceable with All men" To cool down when provoked, takes courage. Jesus did verbally defend himself to those enraged with him. Yet look what Pontius Pilate said to the crowd, amazed at his calm demeanour: " Look! The Man! :)

I find it interesting that you used the symbol of the fish in the simile, and in the sense of the negative energy (in the first two quatrains), whereas the fish is the symbol of Christianity. Your effective use of "but," to mark the volta, and identifying the heavenly abode/domain, carries a message of hope and love. The closing couplet reads like a mantra and a prayer. Thank you for sharing this inspirational poem with us, Tom.

Hi Tom, thank you for sharing about Neil, who knows... I enjoyed your sonnet, "Hold Your Head High" because it inspires me to do the same. The form helps me to see how I may do likewise. Line one of the first stanza had me wondering why stay in the cloud; suggestive of fantasy world, but line one of the third stanza gave clarity. Blessings dear one.

Amen, Tommy. The only way I've found to make it through this mess we call life is to rise above the chaos and enjoy one day at a time from my own view of God's creation. Blessings, my friend. Bill p.s. the image was a great match for the poetry. :-)

i like this sonnet, especially the two closing lines..'to rise above the fray' is sage advice when faced with troublemakers, who often have entity attachments, though cutting contact is even better
