The cagey canary who is the subject of this Limerick is Maya, named after Maya Angelou, the poetess who penned the well-known poem, “Why the Caged Bird Sings.” Seemed appropriate to me.

Poem written for Mararita Lillico's Picture Prompt Poetry Contest, 3/25/2024

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Was a caged canary named Maya Thought she was the goddess Gaia She once sang with fearful trills Whilst cat watched from windowsills Then cagey canary’s coup de ta
Names given to pets brings us closer, Maya is a cute name for a canary. There is also a film "The Cat and The Canary"1939. Good luck! xo
Cute one. I got a chuckle. You know why the caged bird sing? God put a song in her heart, and it has to come out no matter how difficult the cage. Thanks for sharing this one with us and for dropping by my page. Sara K
Excellent Sara, good how the canary represents Maya Angelou’s determination to become free whilst being stalked by the cat who was caged himself at last… Beryl
thanks, Kim. I wrote this Limerick just after waking up this morning--couldn't tell you where the coup de ta idea came from...perhaps from my caffeinated muse! Thanks for stopping by, hugs, Sara
Magnificent limerick. Very original to see the canary free and the cat caged. Best for a win. Hope you will continue to read my poems. I have high regard of your talent.
Dear Sara, This cracked me up! Maya the canary thinking she's Gaia is hilarious. I loved the contrast between her big dreams and the watching cat. I can't wait to hear about the "coup de ta"! LOL! - Blessings, Daniel
thanks for your visit, Daniel, and for sharing your reactions. The canary definitely has an ego :-) You've given me an idea for a follow up Limerick. Thank you. Heretofore, Limericks were not my forte, but I'm growing into them. Have a blessed evening, Sara
