A Cup Unbidden
Another night descends upon her heart
to serve a cup of haunting memories.
Her entrée? Shreds of long-deserted dreams.
A bitter bite compounding her unease
will be dessert. Then when she thinks she’s had
all she can hold, the chalice will refill
without her bidding, filled with deep regrets
she must imbibe that leave her with a chill.
Another night of fits and starts will pass,
but morning’s cup won’t brim with hope and joy.
She seeks escape from her sad present state
and ponders long what means she might employ.
