Notes About The Poem

Picture ©playground.com

When the Moon is Full

They met beside the water’s edge
Drawn by the sound of lapping waves
Beneath the gaze of the full moon
Attraction blossomed into love.
But jealous fate split them apart
When out at sea a raging storm
Capsized his boat; no one survived.
But love like theirs could never die…
Twelve times a year she calls his name
Beside the sea where they first met
His words are borne upon a breeze
Her hair caressed; his presence felt…
This time her heart cannot endure
The absence of his form, his touch
She prays to God to bring him back
The veil between them falls away
Once more he pulls her in to him
As fingers trace her tear stained face
His lips claim hers in ardent kiss
She thanks her God for this sweet gift
His breath, his scent, what joy is this?
But when she opens up her eyes
She is alone on windswept beach
Beneath the gaze of the full moon.

Indeed a great collaboration, dear Paul. Very romantic and evocative. The alignment of longing and sorrow has found beautiful expression in this poem. The romance under the full moon and the twist of fate give a dream like quality to the whole poem! Though a reverie, it is rendered so real that I feel an eerie pain in my heart!

Dear Paul, when two golden pens, like yours and Eileen's, spill tragic ink together upon the page one can't help but feel the passion and pain of lost love in a visceral way. I was especially struck by the repetition of "Beneath the gaze of the full moon" and its touching association to the heartbreaking verse "Twelve times a year she calls his name" - so subtle yet so potent.. so poignant! A seamless collaboration, you've both captured the bitter beauty of sorrow and yearning where one's reminiscence can feel so real. Warmest wishes and hugs my inspiring friend.. ~Susan

Dear Paul...Hope Callman will one day be the name on a book of poetry. :) I love collabing with you, and even if it's only a dream, I'll print out all of our poems and make a scarpbook of my own. Hope all is well. Thank you for your kind remarks on my rejected poem. It still smarts, but you eased the pain.

Eileen did this with you? Glad to see her active again. I still remember the videos she was posting on YouTube. This is sublime. Sometimes memories can be so strong we get lost in the reverie to the point that they feel real, tangible, as you so poetically describe here.
