I Dream Poetry

I sit here with a half bottle of

19 Crimes, red

sipping with an agenda

trying to decipher my

dream

from last night

it was the oddest thing

I dreamt in poetry

metaphors and allegories

rhymes and alliterations

colors and textures

finite and infinite

real and the surreal

everything a blur

sip

it is now 3am and I just want to

sleep

but this damn thing is in my head

and won't let me rest

(sip)

I am focusing my

mind

sifting through the mist and fog

searching for some elusive

truth

that has thus far escaped me

I tilt the bottle for one last drop

and then suddenly, inexplicably

my mind begins to clear

a shape is forming, round

eyes without a face

then slowly, gradually...

ahh, of course, of course

it all makes perfect sense now

for if I am to dream in

poetry

it only stands to reason-

the dream is

you

Tom, I enjoyed your late-night moment of introspection after experiencing a dream entirely in poetic form, resulting in the tender revelation “the dream is you.” Congratulations on your top 10 win on Mile 13 of my 2025 Poetry Marathon Contest. Keep your running shoes on, because Mile 14 has already started.

Never tried 19 Crimes or Snoop Dogg Cali Red, but I have dreamt poetry many, many times especially when the ailment called "writer's block" inflicts me. Enjoyed reading your verse.

No alcohol not even a sip since I landed in hospital with a severe reaction to it. LoL. Nearly died apparently. I was only 17 when it happened. I always thought it was wine I was allergic to, but over time and several tests, found out it was actually the preservative in it that caused the allergy.

Thank you. I wondered about the poetry I would write without the help of Dionysus. As you wrote, the dream of your ardor takes shape when the mind begins to clear. I'm still struggling with that infernal god and the 9 muses who bring me wine.

This is lovely. The mind that has been muddled up and the dream which was blurred, suddenly got cleared up , may be because of the intoxicant....! Very few can dream in poetry. You are able to because poetry is in your life blood. Congratulations on your great win Tom.

Dream in poetry, think in poetry, speak informal moments in poetry...it is the way of the poet -- the way we connect to life and one another. Were there no special other, we would imagine one, write one into musical, magical lyrical existence. Romance is the poet. Love the introspection in this one, and the uninterrupted flow. Excellent read!

This is quite a deep and intriguing write.. I love the artistic and captivating style of this poem which compels the reader to dive deep in the emotions. The descriptions here are beyond phenomenal and I could feel so much poignancy and ache.. "I am focusing my mind sifting through the mist and fog", " I tilt the bottle for one last drop" That bottle and drink definitely works as a brilliant metaphor here I agree. Particularly, the opening and ending lines.. Ah, so brilliant!

Dear Kingy, i really love the creativeness of this poem, and flow of this is brilliant. I was a 3 am poet, until somethings in my life changed for better, so the fact that you mentioned that and the way you’ve used this bottle reference altho literally as your drink, i perceived as a metaphor for being drunk on poetry. And my fave part in this is the ending, that touched my heart. I resonate with many lines. And how you mentioned metaphors etc is clever.Thank you for writing. CONGRATULATIONS.
