Darren White

I am Darren, 22 years old. I write poetry in English, which is not my native tongue, not even my second language, but my third. Which is why you most probably will find a lot of crimes against grammar and spelling. Bear with me.

I can write in all sorts of conventional rhyme, but I prefer free verse. A few of my poems in Dutch have been published in an anthology. One of my English poems has been published in the "Love is Love" anthology for the (family of) victims of the Pulse-shooting in Orlando. I have recently (2018) published my first poetry collection "Intrinsic Brightness", availablde on Amazon.

I have translated Arabic poetry into English for Poetry Festivals. I like being Houdini, chained to the original poem and its conventions, yet freeing myself to deliver the best possible poem. I love it.

I have decided to participate in an official writing competition. (One that is reliable, don't worry). This will be the first time for me and I am quite nervous, so I wanted to ask you: have you ever done a thing like this? How did it work out?

This specific competition has as prize publication and a monetary reward. I don't expect to win at all, it's to get courage to participate, and experience.

But still, would like to read your experiences, as well as any advice you can give me.

Ofcourse you should do it Daniel..See what type of poetry they ' re looking for...And give them what they want.There is nothing to loose..and you are a marvellous poet.:)

Darren, I would say "just write"...allow the muse some space to flow and your spirit to inspire. Go for it.....they're your words and NO ONE ELSE CAN WRITE THEM.....

If that is what you want to do and it is the experience you want then I would say go for it. But remember the result is a reflection of the judges opinion, not necessarily about the quality of your work. Which is good as Frank says. All art is judged subjectively. If you think this competition is what you want then go for it. Good Luck.

Yeah, it's more or less the way it is in here with contests, only on a more global scale, and there are more judges. Thanks. I was also wondering if others tried the same and if yes what their experience is.
