Most think, because they have no clue, that "assault weapons" (they're not called guns in the military) like the AK-47 and the M16 are "powerful" because they look scary, but they are not as powerful as they are effective. They are standard infantry issue because they are lightweight and easier to manipulate. You could fire an M16 with the stock against your nose but I would hesitate to do that with a 30-06 hunting rifle or a M14 which was the predecessor of the M16. Because something looks more scary it doesn't mean it is. I could hit a man sized target from 800 meters with an M14 but not with a M16 and that is why a modified M14 (7.62X51mm vs 5.56X45mm) is used by snipers.

I agree with all below and am familiar with weapons as I was an Army DI. When I heard the weapon fire I knew it wasn't fireworks, way too precise rat-ta-tat, but that is beside the point. He, I think may have altered a weapon by removing a shear pin but he had bump stocks which will help a semi-automatic fire on full auto using the weapon's recoil combined with trigger control but folks, mark my words, no new or old law short of removing all guns would have prevented this, unfortunately--nor Sandy Hook or any other incident over recent history, don't fool yourselves. Becca is very correct and Rob, well yes, if we haven't been "given over" we are well on our way. Let us address that please.

Craig - I think we have been engaged & I think it's irreversible. Peeps just don't want to hear it anymore. I remember hearing once, my parent’s generation is the terminal generation (marked by the formation of the Israeli state), so within 10-11 years, the beginning of the end? They have to get the temple built too.

hah! Is that a pun or is my mind in the gutter again? lol I'm not dangerous ... unless someone threatens my family. Seriously, I have only fired mine in practice and I hope to never have to use it for real. I hate guns :(

But I do agree, Keith, all those assault rifles he had.... definitely a red flag.

I call anyone who could do what he did, a psychopath. But no one could predict what he did. Still my point is, even if guns are illegal, the bad guys will still get them, from somewhere, or modify them to be bad-ass weapons, which this guy apparently did. I'm glad I have my gun, in case I run in to one of these "regular guys" someday.

It's my understanding that owning an automatic weapon made after 1986 is illegal, but reports suggest the Vegas shooter may have made his own. Gun laws will not stop a psychopath. We could get rid of all the guns, and a psychopath will drive a truck into the crowd, like in Nice last year that killed more than 70 people.

If he had not used an "automatic" method of firing, the casualties would have been higher - many of his bullets flew far over the heads of the crowd.

Do you really believe that taking the guns away is going to solve anything? Every law that takes one away is another for the black market to provide. Even if one does not have connections, obtaining a fully automatic assault rifle is not that difficult. Just takes more time in establishing contacts. Our problem is not new and is clearly stated starting with Romans 1:28 , we have been ‘given over’.

Keith - my first sentence was partially in response to the last line of Marilyn's poem. Since ARs and AKs can be converted to fully auto, do we ban them? If we do, we just cause an inconvenience to the shooters while restricting the rights of responsible gun owners. The problem is not the weapon, or truck, or explosive, etc. It’s the moral base, or lack thereof, concerning the population.
