About Sam Kauffman
(Click for Poet Info...)

Hello!  My name is Sam Kauffman.  Knowing what to write for a bio is probably more difficult than writing poetry itself so I'll give you some of the highlights.

I was born and raised in Seattle, WA.  Graduated from the University of Washington with degrees in Music and English- if one major was good, two were better - right?

I am married, to my college sweetheart, have two boys, three grandchildren and one Wheaten Terrier, Mr. Paddy, a show dog - pure octane on four paws! - and now live in California.

Have been writing poetry since college - not sharing how long that has been - along with music - seven albums released  (played on Christian radio) - eight chapbooks of poetry, a series of eight faith based children's stories, three children's books, two full length books, short stories, eighteen one woman musical scripture dramas and a variety of music based programs for churches, youth and women.

Both the music and the poetry have been published.  (I am exhausted looking at that list I might add!)

As you might have guessed I am a Christian singer, dramatist, songwriter, author, retreat leader and "actress,"  that I put in parentheses!

Have been very blessed to have had a music ministry for over twenty years - yikes! has it been that long - traveling coast to coast and sometimes internationally.

While working harder than I have ever worked in my life, I am shocked, amazed and grateful for the reponse this writing and composing - not possible without a lot of heavenly help - has received with numerous awards over the years for both lyrics and poetry.

When not writing - when does that happen? - I love to ski, walk, garden, cook, create needwork, train our show dogs and be with family and friends.

Well, there you have it in a nutshell - seems to be a rather large nutshell.

I am so grateful for the work of Poetry Soup and all of the "soupers" out there for creating a safe place of encouragement and a community of poets who support one another.

It is an honor to be among an international community of such talented and gracious poets and writers.

The Power of One

Blog Posted by Sam Kauffman: 2/25/2022 12:28:00 PM

Dear PS friends,

Over the past few days we have witnessed an unspeakable, savage, brutal, uncalled for darkness descend in the sovereign country of Ukraine.  There is such a feeling hoplessness expressed in questions like "What can I do?"

I want to invite you to look at my poem The Power of One.  I would re-type it here but it is too long for a blog.  I will share with you the beginning and the end.

"Slowly shadows devour the day's light - the silhouette of fear draws breath

From the soul left gasping in a firestorm of fury turning pleas into ashes, weeping into stone

Robbed of Serenity's grace.

Shrilling waves of crisis bind the widly beating frantic heart then overlooks, scoffs and jeers,

A single bloom standing up, trembling as new leaves on thinnist brances

Scanning galaxies of prophectic possibilty that shatter with the speed of light.

(A single bloom) sending out the solitary song prayer of meadowlarks...

To scatter seeds of spring not born...into that far and sheltered arbor beyond the dark horizon

Into the benediction of the ever circling eternal seasons promising..."

Have made a few edits from the original but my point is at this time we cannot dismiss the power of one prayer, one song, one candle.  We can be Abraham's ten at the city gate.

We cannot take up arms but we can arm ourselves with the power of prayer as God's weapon against this savage, brutal, vicious darkness that invades an innocent, sovereign nation - Ukraine.

During WWII, at 6 pm people lit a candle and prayed for peace.  I will be doing this and invite you to do the same and ask you to spread the idea to your family, your friends and your churches.  We are not just one point of light but we can become a floodlight of prayer for peace.

It is an awesome ministry that can reach worldwide!

Thank you for reading this blog.  I hold all of you close in prayer.  Be blessed ambassadors of the Light.

Sam
