Not living our dreams; not doing things; and, not trying things, is often tied up with our fear of failure, but whether we see ourselves as successful or as failures has little to do with our actual performance because it is rooted in our beliefs, particularly our self belief.

At some point in our lives, something happens that causes us to believe we are not good at something, for example, a destructively critical comment to a child.

From that point on, we reinforce our “failure belief” every time something happens that seems to support it, and we simply dismiss any successes as just good luck.

Conversely, the person who believes they are good at something sees every seeming success as further evidence of their skill and ignores failures as bad luck.

Yet, in both cases the number of successes or failures may have been the same!
