Eileen Manassian Biography

I guess you could say I'm a citizen of the world. I've traveled....and I've lived parts of my life in Iran, Lebanon, the US, and Cyprus. I am proud of my Armenian heritage. I was born in Tehran, Iran and soon after that, my family went to the States for my dad to work on his MA degree and many years later, to work on his Ed.D. I have a lot of the Middle East and the West in me, and at times....I feel confused about my identity. I do, however, cling to my Armenian roots and am outspoken about recognition by the world of the Armenian Genocide that took place over 100 years ago.

Since my parents had no common language, the language spoken in our home was English. Yes, I am most fluent in English, and I think, dream, and converse in that language, though I do speak 5 other languages to varying degrees! :)

I am melancholy/sanguine by nature and feel everything very keenly. My highs are SUPER HIGH...and my lows...SUPER LOW! I guess you could say...I'm INTENSE. I'm passionate about poetry to the point of obsession.

The events that have colored my life are the death of my mother due to MS and the war in Lebanon. As a child, it was hard for me to come to grips with the fact that my mother was ill, and to see her go from being a vibrant, well-loved teacher to a wheelchair bound, isolated woman was a very harrowing experience. I do believe, though, that there is a resurrection day and that, by His grace, I will see my Mama fully restored...free of wheelchair, able to sing, laugh, and smile again. The war in Lebanon...bombs landing all around, nights spent in bomb shelters.. has also scarred me to some degree.

What I'm most proud of? That would be my daughter...Shereen Natalie Ghali. She is the light of my life. Her name in Farsi means SWEET! :)

Currently, I teach English at Middle East University in Beirut, Lebanon. Poetry Soup has been a haven for me....most of the time! ;) I've developed amazing friendships here that are very genuine and real. My dream is to one day have my name on a volume of poetry! One can always dream....Thank you for making the effort to get acquainted. God bless!

Hi Eileen, I gave up long ago on trying to make out how things are adjudged or classified, but one thing I know for sure is that views has nothing to do with it! As regards comments, I find that many people hate commenting (it is time-consuming) and some fear that they might say the wrong thing. Also, forget those days when we went by "tacit etiquette" replying to all comments and paying return visits (I still do...old habits die hard!)

Regarding views: Out of curiosity I just went and checked one of my very latest poems posted. "Redlight District" has 340 views, and yet it hasn't even made the "top 100 New".

My poem "Poet" got very few views, no comments and no faves but then went on to be poem of the day yesterday (3rd Aug) I was shocked, so completely random, but like Tom says it means poets like me can have a moment in the spotlight, make of it what you will

Eileen, I have noticed that on my own poetry also and although it is nice to see for a moment, I think also, this does not make sense, hope we get it figured out one day, Constance

Huh... I'm a relative newbie but the way I assumed it worked was, when we post our poems they go to new poems area where I guess folks are scrolling through. Maybe counting the number of people that are scrolling through, perhaps reading as they go but not necessarily. But I don't know if I have this assumption correct. In any case, I'll gladly go read some of your poetry! Can't wait! God bless...xoxo

Sometimes I don't believe the numbers either, especially when one gets hardly any comments at all but the number is huge. I'll have to see this poem now!!

Arlo, thanks for passing by...I would have thought likes (viewership) would be the logical reason a poem is POTD. You could evaluate the poem yourself and think it's average, but popularity doesn't always align with criteria of good literature. However, that's the way in the arts, isn't it. All your other metrics are... frankly... not ones to be used.

Any lay person metrics to quantify the selection of POTD? Random bs??? Popularity contest? Views? Likes? Nepotism??

I thought featured poems in the home page were random, but POTD? What about POTW? IT DOESN'T MAKE SENSE

Not be merit based on views? It sure took a long time for me to gave a POTD. Then why congratulate someone?

It's sad not to believe. I always get excited when my poems get so many views. I sometimes will read a poem but will not really get the gist so I won't leave a comment because I want to be honest in what I say... however, there's no way that would apply to 400 people. Also, then POTD is meaningless if its just an algorithm and not views.

I believe the title draws the views, the topic leaves them speechless. I recently had a similar experience with a poem on abortion, nearly 400 before a comment, and that from a brave poet acquainted with my works. Political quagmires perhaps? xomo

Perhaps. Curiosity. Perhaps. I believe even with differing views we can coexist and dialogue. Thank you for your comment and for visiting my page. Much appreciated. Will be by soon.
