Eileen Manassian Biography

I guess you could say I'm a citizen of the world. I've traveled....and I've lived parts of my life in Iran, Lebanon, the US, and Cyprus. I am proud of my Armenian heritage. I was born in Tehran, Iran and soon after that, my family went to the States for my dad to work on his MA degree and many years later, to work on his Ed.D. I have a lot of the Middle East and the West in me, and at times....I feel confused about my identity. I do, however, cling to my Armenian roots and am outspoken about recognition by the world of the Armenian Genocide that took place over 100 years ago.

Since my parents had no common language, the language spoken in our home was English. Yes, I am most fluent in English, and I think, dream, and converse in that language, though I do speak 5 other languages to varying degrees! :)

I am melancholy/sanguine by nature and feel everything very keenly. My highs are SUPER HIGH...and my lows...SUPER LOW! I guess you could say...I'm INTENSE. I'm passionate about poetry to the point of obsession.

The events that have colored my life are the death of my mother due to MS and the war in Lebanon. As a child, it was hard for me to come to grips with the fact that my mother was ill, and to see her go from being a vibrant, well-loved teacher to a wheelchair bound, isolated woman was a very harrowing experience. I do believe, though, that there is a resurrection day and that, by His grace, I will see my Mama fully restored...free of wheelchair, able to sing, laugh, and smile again. The war in Lebanon...bombs landing all around, nights spent in bomb shelters.. has also scarred me to some degree.

What I'm most proud of? That would be my daughter...Shereen Natalie Ghali. She is the light of my life. Her name in Farsi means SWEET! :)

Currently, I teach English at Middle East University in Beirut, Lebanon. Poetry Soup has been a haven for me....most of the time! ;) I've developed amazing friendships here that are very genuine and real. My dream is to one day have my name on a volume of poetry! One can always dream....Thank you for making the effort to get acquainted. God bless!

Such validation would be embraced by any who write because their being demands it while their brain wonders the purpose. You have been given reason and rhyme for the seasons of your writes and that is a blessing. I am soaring internally for you right now. Remember to never forget how hearing those words felt. CayCay

Hi Eileen! First off-- congratulations to you and your Rhymes of the Times team for pulling off these videos :) I think it's so cool how you capture your viewers-- I enjoy how you are animated when you talk and your voice is so rich and you are so expressive! You're a natural beauty in front of the camera. I will be checking out your future episodes! Can I just give a quick suggestion? Maybe the background audio once you start reading can be lowered down a bit? For me, it sort of competes with your reading, and just me, I get a wee bit distracted by it... pls do continue on with your videos, I really enjoyed watching you and being able to see you!

By now, you're probably enjoying quality time with hubby, so yay for you, dear Eileen! Sorry, I missed commenting about your students very touching letter to you, wow!! I agree, that is one of the best gifts ever, one I know you'd treasure forever-- to be able to inspire your students that way-- I am not surprised at all. Continue to do so...& I'm really very happy for you-- that kind of fulfillment can never be quantified. Glad to share my opinions about the background music... pass by my blog anytime, and I hope it can make you laugh :) hugs back!

Yes, dear....I noticed that too. I will ask that that correction be made. Also, the music in the love episode was not matching the speed at which I was reading. I was not involved in the music selection, and I didn't want to be too picky because these students are pressed for time. Thanks for the suggestions, though. I'm thrilled you took the time to view. My hubby is coming home tonight after a month away...won't be on much. Sorry can't check your blog. I will soon...hugs

Good morning Eileen! What a beautiful note your student wrote! I have kept lovely, touching notes from my ex students, but none compare to this one! ~ I have checked you out on You Tube, and with all honesty I can describe what I saw and heard as excellent. You talk with natural ease, feeling and confidence; your voice timbre is perfect! I'm looking forward to more. hugs...

Thanks, dear Collaborator. You are of the few I actually sent a personal message to about this. :) Your opinion means a great deal to me, Paul. Thank you for taking the time to visit. Of course, with practice...things will get better. It was a hot day out in my yard...and I think that was a reason I wanted to gobble up my words and get into my cool living room with the AC on full blast. :) hugs to you. Have a beautiful day...Malta...Malta...Malta...is in my heart. :)

So nice to hear what some of my favorite people on the Soup sound like ... you have such a vibrant and enthusiastic voice, very fitting for your personality and poetry ... way to spread your horizons on YouTube. Happy for you! :D Continue to inspire, Eileen ... what a joy that must have been to read that note one of your students left you. Thanks for sharing and sending me here :)

Thanks, Timothy. Glad you took the time to check me out! Also....that bit..."some of my favorite people on the Soup" wasn't lost on me. Thanks, dear. I feel the same way about you, and I'm super glad you came back. It was an absolute joy to read this note. Another one of my students who is on the site wrote a lovely acrostic for me. Yes...I had a lovely bday. I wanted you to go there. So you online and thought I'd hit you up. :)Thanks for the words of affirmation, Tim. They have touched my heart. Blessings, dear.

If I wait till I "lose weight"...I'd wait a jolly long time, wouldn't I? ;) I'm not sure if it will continue or not...I'm just glad at least I tried. I'm planning to post one every Thursday. The fourth one is up too! :) We will space out the rest to once a week...on Thursdays! Alexis....what makes me swell with pride is my daughter's reaction. She is very honesty with her opinion. When I sing in church, if go flat on some of the notes, she'll let me know...so I value her opinion. She's so proud of this that she's shared the link on youtube! :) I'm so happy. Thank you for your lovely comment, dear. To come back to write....it means a lot to me. XOXO

:) Thanks, sweetie...I've struggled with weight issues all my life. An under-active thyroid and antidepressants (enhancer of the appetite) don't help the situation...I'm going to try to reduce, but when I'm alone and depressed...I turn to food for comfort and it's an endless cycle. :( Anyhow...Thanks for the positive review. :) I'm going to ask my student to post the third one up tomorrow. It's all about communication! ;) I haven't advertised on FB, yet...I still have things to think through on that one. :) Hugs, dear. So happy that read this encouraging review. Hugs

I will plug in TPS every time. I will also see if at some point some of my fav poets will allow me to read their works. I'm SO excited. :) Thanks! I still have to advertise on FB...I have LOADS of contacts...not to mention family! ;) PS came first. Hugs

I was so impressed at how beautifully you read your winning poem Eileen. What a magnificent poem it is! You look so pretty and speak so professionally. I am happy you are doing this and do hope you continue. I can see why you were so moved by the letter from your student. You never know how many lives you will impact as a teacher. One of my daughters is a teacher of challenged teens and her students love her too. Keep up the great work. Love, Connie

Dear Connie...I'm so grateful for your visit to this blog and to the youtube videos. It wasn't easy for me to go through with it due to my body image issues. I've had this dream for quite some time and talked to my student about it...but kept putting it off. Then I decided to do it on my bday...Can't leave something unfulfilled. Days are passing. Yes, this letter from Michael will be one that I cherish always. He spoke to my heart when I was feeling low. You must be so proud of your daughter, dear. Personally...I'm so proud of you for the CONSTANZA form...That is my next goal...To come up with a form that bears my name :) Aloha, dear. Hugs

I'd blush at your praise if I had lighter skin, dear! ;) Thanks ever so much, Jan...Of course there are things that I'd tweak, but the student who was working on it has a lot on her plate...and I didn't want to overwhelm her. I'll give them both something monetary for their efforts, but still....it's just an experiment. We will see how it goes. There are four others ready to be posted....so, I'll keep you...posted! :) Hugs

:) Thanks, Rob. God knows I needed it. I've been overwhelmed by student support these past couple of days. My family is away for my bday, and I was severely depressed. I enjoyed 7 different birthday parties, this note and an acrostic one by another student, messages, and a blog....I think God knew I needed words of affirmation to tide me over this tough patch. Thanks for viewing....

wow, Eileen, I just viewed both video. AMAZING work by you and your camera person in your back yard. GREAT sound and you have a melodious voice. It's one of the best readings of a poem I have heard. Also congrats on that sweet letter you received from a student. I have had very few students care about my poetry, but the few that did made me feel wonderful!! (I don't teach poetry like I imagine you do. It must be so fun to have students with you that want to learn about poetry)

:) Your praise and affirmation lift my spirit, Andrea. I wasn't sure if I'd share with Soup family. I haven't on FB yet...though that would get me tons of support. I guess I'm just feeling the water...My students know I'm not an expert. I keep telling them we are on learning journey together...and often, their work just amazes me. :) I'm glad that you had some students who appreciated your amazing gift, Andrea. You know what I think of you. In fact, if you ever write an encouraging post, I'll tell my kids..."and SHE'S a language teacher!" ;) Hugs

I'm just a silly goose who is in love with words, Arthur. Poetry allows me to live alternate lives, experience things I would not have the opportunity otherwise. I always encourage my kids to strive to go beyond mediocrity. Some do...As for cake...the students in EACH of my 4 classes three we a party...as did my Reading Club...and the university faculty...So, there was LOTS of cake! If I could have saved you some...I surely would have, dear.

Thanks for inspiring ME! Hugs
