The ten most WOW entries for my WOW contest - Nina Parmenter's Blog

Hello, I’m Nina :-)

I have been dipping in and out of poetry since I was very young - in fact one of my most treasured possessions is a book of poems I wrote when I was six. (That and my copy of Roald Dahl’s Revolting Rhymes - which I still love to this day!) As a teenager I used to gift little rhymes to my friends to cheer them up but I never seriously continued my scribbling into adulthood.

If you’d told me a year ago how much poetry I’d be writing today, I probably wouldn’t have believed you. My brain was fogged by baby brain and, unbeknown to me, an undiagnosed illness. Towards the end of 2017, the baby brain began to improve, I got the illness under control, and with a burst of joy at its new-found clarity and creativity, my brain started to spew forth poetry as never before! I seized the moment, started a blog (called “It All Rhymes”) and with that going down well, joined Poetry Soup in January 2018. So far, I’ve not looked back!

In “real life”, I’m a Marketing Manager and I live in Wiltshire, UK with my fabulous husband and two wonderful, exhausting boys.

The ten most WOW entries for my WOW contest

Blog Posted:8/26/2019 9:44:00 AM

Hi everyone,

My “Wow!” contest filled up quickly, and because I wanted people to write NEW poems, I thought I’d better extend the number of entries to give people time to craft something wonderful. So I ended up with fifty entries! Yikes!

More yikes still, most people seemed to believe that “wow” meant… long poems containing half a thesaurus. Given that I’m quite a small person, I had a lot of BIG words to read. I passed out at one point, but luckily was quickly revived by a passing Poetic Rescue Team. Thank God for those guys, eh?

Sorry to all who were unsuccessful. Obviously, 50 candidates; only ten winners. There were plenty I liked but couldn’t place. There weren’t many rules, but a few did get disqualified for not being new. Hint: Judges can see the date the poem was posted on Soup! (I’m sure that’s new?)

Anyway, because the prompt was to wow me, I judged it with my heart, not a spreadsheet, and out of it came these ten. I love them. Hope you do too.

1st place – A Rose for Rita - Phil Capitano

I am extremely sorry for Phil's recent bereavements, but that is not why I placed this first. It is a deceptively simple exploration of humans and who we are. It is small yet massive. I loved it from the first read.

2nd place – Fallen Down - Gregory R Barden

I was absolutely gripped by this (no marks left, don’t worry). Its rhythmical rhyme-and-refrain scheme is shot through with abandon, lust and darkness. Tasty.

3rd place – Herstory Not History - Thomas Harrison

Where do I start. The idea of the drowned writer, the feminist gifting her essence to the water, to the ink, to the “word” – this is poetry at its most poetic. I absolutely love the final stanza.

4th place – Knotty Tryst - Maureen McGreavy

To prove that a “wow” poem can be short! Just a gorgeous, tangly, honey-smeared image brimming with whatnots. Just love the language here.

5th place – She Gathered Roses - Chris Green

This is a real “take me away” poem that transports the reader right into its imagery. I was with her cutting those roses. I was healed. Beautifully expressed.

6th place – Angels Danced WOW - Georgia Kereopa

See, this is why I didn’t put my usual “no this, no that” restrictions on this contest. I wanted to be surprised by liking something! This is a haibun – ish – and I really thought I didn’t like haibuns. But I love this. Oh yes and it also has a religious element – one of my other usual contest no-nos. This is gorgeous - full of joy and wonderful expression. Well done for crashing my boundaries!

7th place – St Joans Reward - ML Kiser

I really love the last stanza of this, and also the way the poem leads us into it, so simply, but so sadly. Beautiful writing.

8th place – Honey Bees - Dale Gregory Cozart

This earned its spot for gorgeous, fun, playful wordsmithery and absolute joy. There were some tough reads in this contest, a lot of darkness and wordiness. This one was fresh as popping candy.

9th place – Fruit Vendor John - Probir Gupta

What I admired about this poem was the way the opening scene was set with colour, fragrance and quirkiness. And then piece by piece, all that is stripped away. Really clever. The last two lines are so powerful.

10th place – Depths of the Imagination - Wendy Watson

It was a tough decision, choosing this from a good clutch of contenders for the final spot. I went for this because it gave me “wow” in its subject matter; I felt its awe. AGAIN, it was particularly the closing two lines which won me over – actually the opening two lines are wonderful too.

Thank you everybody. I really enjoyed it.

Nina x

Thank you so much for the high placement, Nina, I'm so pleased you enjoyed my little foray into the "gray", (though my shades are the darker ones, lol). I believe there is a substantive place for such poetry, and it pleases me no end when it is appreciated. LOVE your assessments almost as much as the placements ... probably MORE! ;o) <3 Congrats to all who placed!

Thanks Nina for honouring this poem, it means a lot to me as you can imagine. It was written in the depths of grief and came out whole, which almost never happens, hence the simplicity of words but breadth of emotion. Thanks again to all who commented and sent their condolences, I appreciate it.

It did have that feeling of having come out all at once - but what surprised me was the insight you found - and gifted to us all - at such an emotional time. It was an honour to read it Phil.

Thank you for an inspiring contest, Nina, and congratulations to all the winners. I always enjoy your feedback - it inspires one to try just that bit harder next time. It, also, stops one to "write for the judge". Regards, Su

I took a gamble as I was not sure how well-known the history behind the original poem was.

Nina - he's saying a "seven" because there used to be a rating system here at PS (for years) and seven was the HIGHEST ... I only know because it was still being used when I joined, though it ended shortly after. (I don't think she knew that SOS, and was assuming that you weren't rating her the highest - she's a "newbie" like me!). ;o)

Jan, it was! There were a good number of nice poems, but were they wow, and some poems that perhaps should have wowed me but didn’t - i had to stop second guessing myself and judge with my heart. Oh and there were a LOT of poems. Did I mention that lol? :-)

Nina, as always, your recap of the winners' poems always deserves a WOW! Congratulations to the top ten placements! ~Mark

Thank you Mark! I won't lie. I am chuffed with my html links. Although I can't achieve your graphical html-link blogging greatness, they were, in their own way... a journey. ;-)
