Don't apologize to her Phyllis. You didn't do anything wrong. SHE was the one in the wrong and SHE should be apologizing TO YOU. Maybe she wasn't "born good" as her latest blog implied...

So sorry if I have offended you Christine. I could have worded this better. I just wanted to know if taking a class has helped in any way to learn the forms. It does not matter if you do not want to answer the questions. No harm intended. phyl

Phyllis my travels in the poetry started with an inspirational alliteration, progressed by discovering short forms(Crapsey American cinquains) to reading poetry of acknowledged poets and then to self-study of poetry technical books. All of this, a decade or so in time, I now see as an apprenticeship (partly in this workshop on PS ,but including 'judging' poetry by reading in contests I held)to writing open free verse and reading it aloud on youtube and elsewhere as(for me) finally reaching the 'peaks' to which poetry leads.Best wishes with your creative writing Phyllis and regds to your family. the one and only time I joined a poetry class I was kicked off it! lol I've always thought that reading other poets is the best way of learning how to write poetry...I'm not a great lover of forms, simply because I find them restrictive; I would say I flirt with forms while remaining true to free verse...

Hi Phyll, I've missed our chats. I started writing as Andie in High School, then stopped for decades, though I did Minor in Shakespeare at University. For the past few years, some of us have had a published haiku poet of some renown mentoring us. Now, I am taking a Prose poetry class with a winner of the Pushcart Prize in Poetry. I learn from everyone who is willing to teach me.

A really interesting discussion, Phyllis: There isn't enough room here for me to answer in detail. I came to writing poetry late in life. Although I had a lifelong love for poetry, as a Nurse my training was in science, Chemistry and Biology. But when I retired I could indulge the more liberal Arts side of my personality and began a self study of writing and Poetry. The internet has been a marvelous resource and I did write an essay on this and my findings regarding form and story. Maybe I will post it as a seperate blog because it is a few pages long. Thanks to all who shared their views. Yours in poetry: SuZ

No classes here, Phyllis......however I often listen to PBS morning recitation, a daily poem read by Garrison Keilor once in the morning and once in the afternoon.....and have been so moved by the narrative/free verse poems, which seems to be the most often chosen for this program......that I lean towards that particular form. With less structure.......it touches my heart with the honesty and emotion.

@ Suzette: There are many forms which are "just" intellectual word-syllables games: Fibonacci, Tetractys, Than-Bauk, etc . Also, there are forms like Villanelle, Pantoum, Terzanelle, etc that "play" with a serie of requirements for planning and implementing an intellectual (and challenging!) method of composition. Poetry is more than that ... Just my humble opinion.

I am taking two right now; creative writing and a writing workshop. Both are at a local community college. I have been encourage there to try to publish my poems, so have been less active here.

I took an internet course way long ago maybe eight years..I felt that I learned some but I had to give it up..When I came on here, I really started to learn..I just do research..The down side on here is I don't feel that I really have a true teacher..Sara

Forms versus content. Both are important to my mind. I took Literature (Eng & Afr)at college level and that included everything from Chaucer and Milton to Shakespeare, the Lake Poets, etc. As far as form is concerned: One would not enter a Rap contest with a Gregorian Chant ... Since joining PS it has helped me to experiment with different forms and I love it. Hence my new website breaking it down into forms. So, if you like a particular poem, don't you think it is interesting to learn about it? Instead of copious reading poems and studying forms as I did the past year - I have now summerized it for my own reference. Check out my website, if you like. Love, Su www.suzette-poet-author.webs.com

I took two Creative Writing classes: one with writer Marta Magellan (children literature) and the other one with Ricardo Pau-Llosa, poet, art critic of Latin American art in the US and Europe, and author of short fiction (nominated for the Pulitzer prize). I use to read book about poetry and I've learned a lot (believe it or not! LOL). Forms? No, I dont think that forms are important.

One more thing I beleive that this blog is offensive. If you want to discuss poetry form you do not have to ask us how many individuals attend poetry class. You could have communicate the information in another way. It is not what you say but it is how you say it.

Please allow individuals to express themselves freely. We are not in school anymore...freedom of expression please. If you dont like someones poem you do not have to read it if it doesnt gravitate to a certain from to your taste. I love this website because you can find a mixture of different people who express themselves in different ways. And I firmly beleive that is good.

I have never taken poetry classes. I think it would be good to do so if one has a chance and a good teacher. When I was in school we had Literature classes and poems were included. We had to memorize them sometimes or analyze them but I don't believe I was taught anything on form. I write mostly in rhyme because that is what I first learned about. Joyce

phyllis, I studied about poetry a little bit in my creative writing class in high school, but I learned the most by just reading other poets. well, I took a class offered by Poetry.com (this was before I knew what scam artists they were) But I have to hand it to them: their poetry course was excellent. It was by mail and in today's computer world, maybe they are just doing it online now. It really helped me identify my niche as a more classic form writing poet.
