I am an International Man of Mystery - born in Trinidad, raised in New Zealand, and living in Australia. My earliest influences lyrically were those of the Calypsonians of the 1960s, the greatest being old Birdie himself the Mighty Sparrow as well as the joyful songs of The Merrymen. Later in my teens I was struck by the power of words and language from the mercurial pen of Bob Dylan. The first poem I ever wrote was in 1975 at the age of 14 for a class assignment. I copied the lyrics from the Pink Floyd song "Money" and got a great mark from my teacher, Mrs Laird. She congratulated me on my effort and creativity (something I possessed very little of in school) and so I eventually came clean and had to re-write it. She did commend me on my honesty and choice of lyric though and did what good teachers do...engage and encourage. It could have been worse - I nearly chose a Frank Zappa song that would have been highly inappropriate! My poetry is very much like me - a work in progress! I often revisit and revise my catalogue as I grow as a writer and am grateful for any constructive advice. The real writer and talent in my family is my wife who is more an author than a poet, but she is far too sensible to bare her soul to the world. I, however, am not! I love my golf, my cricket and my Rugby League (that's a similar sport to Rugby for all my non-European/Australasian readers) and support Russell Crowe's team, the mighty South Sydney Rabbitohs and the North Queensland Cowboys in the Australian NRL (National Rugby League). Go the Bunnies and go the Cowboys!

The Place I Call Home!

Hello Soupers.

Here are a few pics of the place I call home...

I live in Hervey Bay on the Fraser Coast about 3 hours north of Brisbane just a ferry ride away from Fraser Island - the largest sand island in the world. Hervey Bay is the whale watching capital of Australia and home to an abundance of marine life.

Below is Mon Repos, a breeding sanctuary for the beautiful and endangered loggerhead turtle in the summer months. The largest nestings in the South Pacific region. If you ever visit Queensland (home to the Great Barrier Reef) you absolutely must visit these magnificent creatures as the hatchlings emerge from the nest and take their first tiny steps down to the water as they've done for millions of years. Very few survive and even less return as adults to breed. A wonder of nature you will never forget!

Below is a pic of the marina. I can see my house in the shot. That's my local beach (at low tide) where I swim and walk the dogs and clear away the cobwebs of my mind. There's an aquarium on the beach in the background where you can swim with sharks!

Gotta go. My wife has just issued a third and final warning! In my house that's like DEFCON 1. She says if I dont get off that computer and rake the leaves I too will be an endangered species!!

Hi there, Nette. You're in Philly - we're almost neighbours. Pop around for a cup of coffee and a chat! You are one introduced species that I would welcome;-) Thanks for stopping by.

What a great spot! Thanks for posting. The wildlife is amazing.

It truly is, Tom, but we've lost so many native species here in Oz that we can't afford to lose anymore. The Great Barrier Reef is suffering from coral bleaching which is a huge issue with possible devastating results if something isn't done.

It all looks so wonderful, Keith! You are a lucky man !!!

Hi there Carrie. If we can preserve the natural breeding grounds, feeding grounds, and playgrounds of all these amazing creatures then we will all be able to count ourselves truly lucky. These days mostly the shout of "thar she blows" means the whales are only getting shot by cameras! Long may it continue.

I've been to Hervey Bay and Frasier Island and it was a fantastic experience. Funnily the first thing I noticed and just remembered was shutters on the windows of homes (never see that here). Then we were off on the Ferry, fishing, camping, exploring, the obligatory kiwi jokes about dingoes. You definitely are in your own wee slice of paradise.

The media really did a job on the Chamberlains. Anyone who knows anything about dingos knows they're more than capable of snatching a baby and dragging it off. Cheers.

LOL, I've grown past that stage! I think it was just after our first child was born that we stayed on the Island and I was terrified of the dingoes (aka Lindy Chamberlain"the dingoes got my baby").

Yeah, we get a lot of Kiwis over here. I spent 25 years in Auckland myself. All those things you mentioned are a big part of the Fraser Coast. I am familiar with the mating rituals of Kiwis. Tell me Mark, are you one that eats, roots and leaves!!!:-)

Thanks Jan. We have a white humpback whale (very rare) that visits every year which the local Aboriginals called Migaloo. He's got his own Facebook page. What a sight - just breathtaking!

Very nice place Keith. The leaves will eventually blow away. Enjoy your paradise.

Tim, the leaves aren't the problem. Once they're done the old girl just finds something else for me to do. I wish I had a shed (man cave) I could hide out in but alas we opted for a Balinese hut instead - big mistake! I need something with a chain and lock! Cheers.

Thanks Nandita. We love our land and marine here and are fiercely protective of our little haven. Hard to believe some countries still hunt these magnificent creatures!

Thanks Jo. If you love nature you'll love the Fraser Coast. Now if I could just figure out a way to get rid of the people;-). Sadly, they are not endangered!

Well Teddy, I'm not "on" the beach but pretty dam close. In about 7 weeks down at the boat harbour we have the Blessing of the Fleet where we celebrate the beginning of the whale season. Already there are whales in our waters. Thankfully their numbers are increasing every year. Cheers mate.

Thank you, Wonder Woman! They call Australia the "lucky country", and for good reason. Some folk say I'm like Australia - big and empty! Sweet dreams!
