Dreamt a dream
about falling asleep,
woke up in yet another one—
a near-seamless string
of dreams within dreams.

As I become older,
I continue to retain the heart
of an eternal child. Sort of like Peter Pan—

and I will always take my chances
with Captain Hook.

I find talking about myself in third person
to be creepy, and refuse to do it
unless it's somehow connected
to a major deal that offers me mullah.

I'm a Canuck who grew up in the Canadian
Pacific Northwest.
Aside from writing, I enjoy visual art
and bonsai as creative outlets.
I love mountain biking.
I'm a gardener, bio-chemist,
and parent of a talented child
who continues to out-shine her Dad.

I don't do conventional all that well;
I come as I am,
and hope that you come as you are,
as friend or foe,
so that we can learn and benefit
from each other.

Some wildlife photos of mine

My daughter and I bike up to a conservation area that is located in a neighbouring township. We don some of our grubbier clothing, pack along swim-wear (for the river) and food, then ride the trails.

During many of the visits there, I focus on photographing the landscape and larger animals, such as white-tailed deer, foxes, beavers, bobcats, osprey, bald eagles, etc. During our recent trips, I have instead been focusing on photographing the smaller creatures.

At the risk of seeming boring (lol), here are some of those photos.

This is a Chrysemys picta (Painted turtle)

The same :P

Here is a lighter, girly version of me holding the Chrysemys picta.

This is an Argiope aurantia, my favourite species of spider. This Madame is gorgeous. One can notice the two hearts located on its abdomen. The Argiopo aurantia has a smooth, shiny abdomen, yet its cephalothorax is hairy (gray/tan). Each evening, this spider eats the centre of its web, and re-weaves the centre in the morning.

In this photo, one can see how distinct the 'heart' is (located in the middle area of the abdomen, for those of you who might have short attention spans and/or poor eyesight).

Some good ol' honey bees collecting pollen from Milkweed (it isn't a weed though).

That's all.

Milkweed is the favourite staple diet of many butterfly species. Because of the Milkweed and some other indigenous flora, a lot of different species of beautiful, large butterflies migrate to this area from South America. I come across species of butterflies that I have never seen before. Next visit I am going to focus on photographing the butterflies.

Lovely photos, Chris. Thanks for sharing...I have arachnophobia. ;) How interesting that this spider has hearts on its abdomen. I LOVE HEARTS. I collect heart shaped objects and paintings. Yea...mushy, I know, but I still will stay away from this spider...hearts and all. BTW...if that gorgeous little girl is a smaller lighter version of you....You must be one good looking man! :) I appreciate beauty. Great blog. HA...the patcha for this? EWW....I think that has to do with the spider...the turtle is adorable.

BTW...Chris, my dad told me about a book you might like to read...The General's Son. Sorry, I don't have an author reference, but it is about the issue you last blogged about.

Ah, so a spider with hearts might be something of a conundrum for someone who has arachnophobia and collects hearts? Thanks, but as far as the looks, I am not so sure on some mornings lol! I am glad if you enjoyed the photos :D

Yeah, I agree. I haven't taken any proper photography courses, so I point and click, and hope for the best. I would enjoy taking a proper photography course.

Hope you don't mind, I'm gonna ramble here...Speaking of big spiders, I actually caught (ok not barehanded, I used a box), of what I think is a hunstman spider in my mom's room last month, boy that spider can jump & it's so fast! I showed it to my kids in school, & they really enjoyed seeing it, but my nephews enjoyed it better when I finally caught a fly barehanded to feed the spider. But yup, as much as they wanted to keep it for a pet, we did release it in the garden afterwards.

Yes, after checking the link below (thanks), it's clear that the huntsman and wolf spiders are quite different from each other. Wow, those huntsman spiders move quickly!

I checked a bit on the wolf spider (that is one cool looking spider), it looked different from the spider that I caught though, which had very long legs & a diff abdomen --looked very much like the one in this youtube video, esp around the 40 sec mark. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gths8z60j_w

Cool. I wonder if the huntsman spider is similar to the North American variety of wolf spider?
Date: 8/14/2014 10:37:00 AM
Aww shucks, your daughter sure is very beautiful! Awesome pic of her and that turtle! I find it so cool how you guys spend precious time with nature, bravo to you! I'm sure you have loads of fun. Kids definitely need more away time from computers & gadgets (note to self). As for that spider, how cool that it's also known as the writing spider--seeing this actually reminded me of this big spider I saw as a kid, I'm not sure if it's the same species? We call it gagambang pari- priest (pari) spider (gagamba)-- but it also had these bright yellow markings on its abdomen, if I recall right, it was like an x-mark, but what I also remembered about it was its egg sac, sort of neon yellow green?

Thanks, nikko. Yeah, the writing spider is another name for Argiope aurantia. I am not sure about the priest spider that you are describing? The colour of the egg sack sounds wonderful. There are much larger spiders in your area of the world.
Date: 8/13/2014 10:20:00 PM
I used to see that spider in my yard every year NOT this year, there have been much less sounds of night insects & frogs too :(. We are killing all the little things ... [sigh]

You had that species of spider in your yard? Nice. Well, help bring them back? It takes a lot of dedication towards intervention and hard work. Change is the universal constant that everything, something and nothing, cannot escape the reality of.

Add a bit of darkness (both mentally and physically), a touch more slant to the eye and cheekbone, some ruggedness, and a dash of ugliness .... and *voila!* (Hehe!)
