A Poem Deleted in Error - Gary Radice's Blog

About Gary Radice

Bloggers Photo

I'm a married 60 year old Brit who lives near Liverpool, UK.

I started writing poetry as a hobby after taking retirement from my role as a Registered Mental Health Nurse working in the field of Brain Injury Rehabilitation.

Themes of the seaside, railways and the naivety of childhood crop up often in my poems and I like to write (usually in rhyme) just what I see, no matter how trivial that may be.

Although some of my work is based on my own personal experiences, I try to focus on imagery and places in time that are identifiable to the reader as well.

I also enjoy 'weaving' stories through my work and occasionally put my own spin on the classics.

Other than at school, the only poems I have ever written are those that you can read here at Poetry Soup.

If you have the time to view and comment on any of my work here then I would really appreciate it. I'm always open to constructive criticism.

Thank you

A Poem Deleted in Error

Blog Posted:10/28/2021 2:53:00 PM

Hi All

I decided to prune a few poems from my list of poems tonight - I do that sometimes - but unfortunately I went and deleted my most recent poem in error. "The Last Train From Soup Central"

Luckily I had saved the poem to Word but sadly I have lost all the wonderful Soupers' comments I had received for it. To add insult to injury it had been awarded a Poem Of The day too so it will no longer appear if clicked from the POTD list.

1) I've reposted the poem tonight just in case anyone at all is wondering why I've done this

2) Am I right in thinking once gone all the comments are gone for good too?

3) Does anyone else ever prune their list of poems from time to time or is it just me?  :)

Cheers - Gary

I purge some too....when I realize they aren't reflective of who I want to be see as. I try to keep everything positive. But somehow one poem was deleted I don't remember deleting... I was actually wondering if there was an indexing issue on the delete command?!? Probably not, but do you explicitly remember deleting that poem?

Hi Robert. I remember the poem disappearing as a result of a combination of errors. My mouse was over an x and without clicking went to the "Are you sure?" page..I honestly thought I was deleting a poem above the wrongly deleted poem on my list and so agreed to delete anyway. The more I write about it the more I get embarrassed about it all. Never mind. What's done is done. Cheers - Gary

Ouch! So sorry to hear this happened. Glad you re-posted - can't wait to read it!

Thanks Sam. My own fault - I had meant to delete a poem above it. Cheers - Gary

I used to delete some of my poems from PS long ago, on rethinking, I realised it was not needed, now I don't do it anymore, Gary:) off to read your train poem:)

Hi Jo. Thank you for your comments and your reading of my poem. I appreciate it. When I joined PS two years ago I never envisaged I would write so many poems. As my list grew I decided that I would just keep my list to one page (there are so many poems on PS) but I'm now having second thoughts. Perhaps those poems of mine that I thought weaker actually showed evidence of the process I have been through? I may reintroduce them but I also think the comments attached to them at the time were key to that 'growth' process too. Thinking on, I doubt I will delete any in future. Cheers - Gary

Thanks for letting us know. It's a great poem, as I'd said before, reading it out loud sounds like a journey on a train. Excellent pace and cleverly written. I've added it to faves again... When you delete your poem, it disappears from the lists of faves too. Hope this helps. All the best. :-)

Thank you Natasha. I hadn't thought on about the 'fave' issue. I appreciate the re-fave :) Cheers - Gary

I keep all mine Gary and sometimes look back and tweak them a bit, I use PS export to save them on a pdf file and every poem I've written is there, worth doing because if the site crashes they're gone, I remember a bad crash a couple of years ago and on the day it happened I'd got potd, it was stuck on that for a week, even I got sick of seeing it lol. It only saves poems, doesn't save pics or comments. Tom

Hi Tom. Thanks for your comments. I tend to save all my poems to Word every couple of weeks but yes, you are right, Soupers' comments aren't saved..yet my replies to Soupers' comments thanking people are. :) Tom, you may be the only poet who's had a POTD as a POTW :) Cheers - Gary

Yes, your comments are likely gone and that is most unfortunate. I have never pruned my poet-tree!!! But I am sure there are bad ones there! For me, my poems are like children, and I keep around even the bad ones! Let me go see your poem that was a POTD, Gary!

Hi Andrea. I must admit having read both Constance's and your own comments here I'm having second thoughts about deleting any future poems of mine. I suppose they do show a process of sorts of my own poetic journey. Yes..maybe I won't delete any more. Thanks for making me think on. Cheers - Gary :)
Date: 10/29/2021 7:29:00 AM
Gary, I do think the comments on the poem deleted are gone for good and your POTD honor with it and sadly there is no way to get that back. Do I prune poems? My answer is never. But, I admit to deleting all my poetry pre August 2012, plus destroying every hard copy, when I had a melt down and I grief that every single day so that is why I never delete now. Why do you want to delete some of your poems ? ~friendship and poetry _Constance

Hi Constance. It's just a personal thing about pruning the list really. I've always used PS as a form of workshop. There are some of my poems I've never been happy with - perhaps where I experimented a bit too much for my own good..I also like the idea of keeping my list of poems to just one PS page. Cheers - Gary

It’s a shame your poem got mistakenly deleted, but I’m glad to see it has been repeated… Belle

Thank you Belle for your kind thoughts. At the end of the day and in the big scheme of things I guess It's not a big issue. I'm just fustrated with myself. :) Cheers - Gary

Hi Gary, sorry you had this problem. I do not delete any poems I put on Poetry Soup; however, I do save all of my poems directly from PS occasionally so if there is a glitch or PS disappears, I won't have lost them. I wish I could help you, but I'm a techno-failure. I probably have some of your poems on my FAVE list, but I doubt you'd find comments there.

Hi Milt. Thanks for your comments. Luckily, I too regularly save my poems. I was hoping that any comments made would be saved in Soupers' comments out box but it seems not. Once the poem has been deleted there's no way back. Cheers - Gary

Hi Gary, so sorry that you have lost comments to your poems. Yes, deleting a poem will take comments away. Re-posting is all you can do. To answer your question on 3. I don't delete poems from time to time. My best to you. ~ Brandy

Thanks for your reply Brandy. I guess it's just one of those things. I note too that my poem still appears in the Top new poems list but its link is broken. At least I still have the poem. Cheers - Gary

That must sting. I’m sure you realise that another has gone… sorry title escapes me but it was Poodoodoo or something along those lines. Glad you’ve put ‘Last Train’ back, it was truly superb!

:) The Roo-doo-doo needs a bit more work. Whenever I lose my muse I play around with a few older poems to keep the mindpen from drying up. Some of these poems then stick around and others don't only to make a reappearance at later dates. I would advise all to save the comments to your poems so that you don't suffer the same fate as myself. Cheers - Gary

I still haven't got to grips with my laptop properly tbh. It appears I dont need to click to just does it if the mouse hovers over the cross..I'm not even sure that makes sense :)..I deleted about 10 of my poems purposely and one accidently. Weirdly Soup saves my replies to Soupers' comments but not the comments themselves. Ah well..That's showbiz I guess Cheers - Gary :)
