PS Poems With Sound Effects - Gary Radice's Blog

I'm a married 60 year old Brit who lives near Liverpool, UK.

I started writing poetry as a hobby after taking retirement from my role as a Registered Mental Health Nurse working in the field of Brain Injury Rehabilitation.

Themes of the seaside, railways and the naivety of childhood crop up often in my poems and I like to write (usually in rhyme) just what I see, no matter how trivial that may be.

Although some of my work is based on my own personal experiences, I try to focus on imagery and places in time that are identifiable to the reader as well.

I also enjoy 'weaving' stories through my work and occasionally put my own spin on the classics.

Other than at school, the only poems I have ever written are those that you can read here at Poetry Soup.

If you have the time to view and comment on any of my work here then I would really appreciate it. I'm always open to constructive criticism.

Thank you

Gary

PS Poems With Sound Effects

Blog Posted:2/18/2021 3:43:00 AM

Just a quick couple of questions about adding sound to poems:

Has anyone out there in PS Land attempted to add background sound effects to a poem (ie MP3 sounds of rain etc) rather than a straight reciting of the poem? If so, can you give me a link where I can read and listen to it and offer up any tips. Thank you.

I'm currently experimenting with such to add ambience etc but keep having second thoughts. (ie do people think it's a gimmick, and a definite no-no on a poetry site where it's just words that matter etc? )

Does the sound follow the poem if entered for a PS competition or does the judge just see the words minus the sound bar?

Thanks

Gary

That's an awesome idea, Gary. I tried adding crackling fire sounds to the audio of my poem, "Inferno"(link below) and it didn't come through at all. TV can be heard in the background instead, lol. Oh well... https://www.poetrysoup.com/poem/inferno_1227638

Thanks Edward. I'll take a listen. :) I downloaded Zapsplat that has sound effects just to start experimenting with the idea. You click MP3 download button next to your choice of sound and away you go... My finished try is at https://www.poetrysoup.com/poem/vacancies_edit_with_background_sound_1330414

Gary, I feel Tom gave you the best advice for adding sounds to your poems. You can add them to a PS competition poem although the sponsor will not hear until the contest is finalized just like sponsors do not see images or any poet's notes added _Constance

Hi Constance. I think I'm set on the idea of just adding background noise (ie the sound of seagulls etc.) and leaving my voice out of things at the moment and keep it simple that way. Its effective so I'll probably add sound to a couple more poems. Cheers - Gary

Gary, I am sure whether you are reading your poem or adding sound effects the listen to poem still will work, let me know how that works out for you _Constance

Thank you Constance. I thought as much. Another thing Ive noticed is that when you add sound the writing above the bar states "Listen to the poem" when in my case, it's not a reciting of the poem itself, but intended background sounds that are played .. ..if you get what I'm saying as I think I'm beginning to confuse myself. :) Cheers - Gary

Interesting Gary, I've done a couple of sideshows for family reunions and added music and had to make one track from about 10 mp3s so I could embed it in powerpoint. Just checked and the good news is you can actually mix tracks although I've never tried it. You could record yourself reciting the poem then find an mp3 of rainfall for example then mix the two to create one mp3, you can fade in and out to give it a professional touch. Took me a while to get my head around it but you can download a manual, I asked Google rather than read pages and pages. The software I use is called AUDACITY, its completely free to download and use , ive used the Windows version and you can get versions for Windows 10,7, XP etc. You can also download an apple version too. Good luck. Tom

This is great advice Tom, thankyou! All I have at the moment is the sound of some waves and a seagull attached to a poem that I'm thinking sounds and looks a bit gimmicky. ..but I will persevere. Thanks again..oh, and happy birthday for the other day :) Cheers - Gary
