Hello, I’m Nina :-)

I fell in love with poetry again around three years ago, and have become completely promiscuous. I am currently dating every form of poetry from light to deep, from formal to free. I'm not ready to go steady with any of them yet.

in the mean time, I'm having fun reading poetry, writing it, and leaving small poetic deposits wherever I can. My poetry has been published in Lighten up Online, Light, Snakeskin Poetry, Ink, Sweat & Tears and The New Verse News. I also write a poetry blog at www.facebook.com/itallrhymes.

I live in Wiltshire, UK with my lovely husband and two videogame-obsessed children who I'm assuming will naturally blossom into Byrons one day.

The Word Bin - a fun project to get involved in!

Blog Posted:7/10/2020 3:36:00 PM

If you love words, then you probably have words you hate too!

If one is springing to mind right now, you can get involved in a project called The Word Bin. It's a daily podcast in which people nominate a hated word to be binned and explain why. All you have to do is record your bit on your phone and send it in.

As I was (and still am) in a dry spell poetry-wise, I thought this might be something fun and creative to get involved in so I braved it! I had a real giggle creating my contribution, which is in episode seventeen.

Go on! Nadia who is running the project  is really keen to get contributions from English speakers from all walks of life, from all over the world. You can find out more here: https://fairacrepress.co.uk/the-word-bin/

You can hear the podcasts online here: https://thewordbin.podbean.com/ You can also download / subscribe to the series on iTunes and I think also on Google Play. Even if you don't want to get involved, they're a great listen for the verbose!

Nina, another for the bin is not so much a word but a' sound ', as the letter h(aitch)when wrongly pronounced as 'haitch' especially when it commences a word or in an acronymn like N HAITCH S

Haha, too right - and my son’s reception teacher must have pronounced it this way, because he says it, and it’s infuriating! (Of course, he is sticking to it particularly keenly now he knows I find it annoying!)

Nina, straight into thebinfor distri or contri as a two syllable prefix ,(instead of one)attached to the word tribute for example.Yes ...our native tongue English is a living language(and thus the reason it is 'the' global language of choice),but such linguistic laziness typifies the superficial ,shallow trendy bandwagons, sadly, so prevalent in this era.

Back to bug you, Sweet Parms, (cuz I'm just a phraseology stalagmite here now) - so, as a (current and oft'-frustrated) student of Arabic and friend of the UAE royal fam, ('tis true!), I was mulling over "bin" in that context, generally translated as "son of" ... sad-to-say that took me to a rather profane place, ending with another of "those" words that I'd rather not ever have known ... it certainly fits the mode, but too much so, I think, lol! Words ARE fun, though! (As is teasing my British Sista with posts full of parentheses and odd contractions, haha!). Love ya, kiddo - email soon! :o) <3

Petrichor...such an awful sounding word for the refreshing after rain scent ..just saying Petri brings to mind Petri dishes and putrid stuff..and the Chor part sounds like the cough from the choke that follows such visuals! Great blog Nina... :)

Do you know what Susan, you’re right - I’m glad there is a word for that, but it’s considerably uglier than the thing itself!

I'd like to nominate the word "so" for the bin, but only when it appears at the beginning of a sentence.

..and while I'm at it: I detest the word "Uptalk" and listening to people engaging in it. It's when people utter sentences and feel the need to place a rising intonation at the very end of them, as if they were questions.

So, I should have been clearer; the word "so" when it used at the beginning of a sentence in answer to a question posed. Example: "What's your name?" "So, my name's Gary" :)

In short Nina to paraphrase WCW, poetry is a written (or spoken)art form with guiding principles.

Much 'free verse' posted here that I read Nina is short hand label for 'I don't know' or 'I can't be bothered to find out' and too often in reality is prose and thus not poetry at all.

either 'verse'(if posting here on PS) or 'open verse' elsewhere.Further elaboration would need a blog to itself Nina, rather than 400 character max!

My current trigger is the word “matters”. It is used liberally and dishonestly in circumstances where it clearly does not matter.

I’m with you on that one Brian! Whatever I feel about the meaning of the word (I’m a liberal and even I feel that woke-ness - eugh- is out of control), it just has a HORRIBLE sound. Also, grammatically, that usage just sounds WRONG! It really grates!
Date: 7/11/2020 4:05:00 AM
Nina, first off, congrats on being selected for the podcast! Secondly, your bit was brilliant. "Learnt about it in a well-fingered textbook in some repressed corner of a English boarding school" made me laugh. Thirdly, thank you for sharing it with the PS community. My vote would be for the word 'historic', currently overused by American television to hype any sporting event or reality TV competition. I hear it in commercials at least 3 times a week.

Cool - I'll check it our, (as I am not 'involved' here much anymore, and may actually have time for it, ha!) ... sounds like fun! ("Moist" comes to mind immediately, and the "c" word, which I won't even TYPE) ... pus, gag, scab ... see what you've started, Parms?? ;o) <3

'Moist' may have gotten a big nudge as most hated word from Jimmy Fallon's Thank-You Notes... "Thank you, the word 'moist' for being the worst word ever" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lgny37maVmY

Ha - I didn’t choose moist but I did use the word several times in my supporting argument! Ew, gag and scab! Could be used together in a really ORRIBLE poem. DO take part Gregory, it’s fun (not that I want to distract you from your music!)
Date: 7/10/2020 10:36:00 PM
Can you nominate a phrase? For me, 'It goes without saying..' always drives me crazy, because if that's true, then WHY SAY IT? Also, 'I could care less' because they always mean 'I couldn't care less!' I think you're going to get a lot of comments on this blog, Nina :)

I agree with both of those, Michelle. Have you ever tried to explain to someone who says 'I could care less' why it makes no sense? It is an exercise in futility! But that goes without saying...

You can’t unfortunately because there are loads of these aren’t there! ‘I could care less’ really confused people outside the US! The very British ‘I’m not being funny but...’ when you’re about to say something really rude. And reaching out! “I’ll reach out to so-and-so!” “I’ll tell you what, why not just talk to them?” “Yeah, no problem, I’ll circle back...“ “Nah, don’t do that, just let me know what they said...!“
Date: 7/10/2020 7:33:00 PM
Hi Nina, I think the word ‘verbose’ should go in the bin, cos I have no idea what it means, and if I tried to explain further I’d use far more words than needed ). Take care, Richard
