Georgie's Cruel World

Blog Posted:1/23/2020 9:55:00 PM

Where I live, a long haired dacshund is not the kind of dog one sees everyday. So imagine my surprise when I was out walking Buddy and one came shuffling up. He had his head down going very slow, he looked defeated. So me, being a dog lover, went to check him out. When I called for him, he paid me no mind and as I got closer he acted as if he didn't even know I was there. Of course Buddy was raising hell barking. I tried to calm Buddy so as not to frighten him. Now it was a cold, rainy, windy winter day. As I bent over to pick him up,he was drenched. When I first touched him he raised his head, startled. His face was snowy white and I immediately knew he was an old dog. Upon closer inspection I could see his eyes were covered completely by cataracts which had robbed him of his sight. His auburn and black coat was matted, dirty and smelled of urine and feces. He was frail and weak. Now I'm the kinda guy that knows my neighbors. Buddy and I have walked this 2 and half mile neighborhood hundreds of times. Somebody had dumped him. When I picked him up, I couldn't tell if he was shivering from the cold or if he was afraid of me or perhaps both, but I took him in and cleaned him up the best i could. Gave him food and water and put him in a cage with some warm blankets. Since i have other dogs I simply couldn't let him mingle not knowing if he had some kind of disease or not. He slept almost non stop for 2 whole days only waking up long enough to eat and for me to tote him outside to do his business. The 3rd day he started becoming more alert, but being blind and in a strange place he would simply sit in the middle of the living room floor. I knew he would be ok. I called a local privately owned dog rescue and she agreed to take him off my hands. He looked like he would have been named "Georgie" so that's what I called him. After she took Georgie away I started weeping uncontrollably, the tears just ran down my cheeks. Not because he was going to a rescue but I got to thinking how old he was and how helpless he was and that the person or persons who once loved him simply dumped him out because he was old and needed a little  TLC. I mean whenever he had to go, someone had to take him. It affected me profoundly. You see, I am old and my facial hair is white. I use glasses, I obviously don't need a wet nurse just yet but that day may come. I don't get many visitors these days, my youngest son drops by about once a week but other than that I have basically been discarded by society. I think I knew personally how Georgie felt. What a cruel world this is!

Well-said, my friend ... I take care of my elderly folks, (93), and while there are days when I question my usefulness, I still believe it is the right thing to do. Dad passed on 10/27 and had severe dementia by then, so I have a ton of horror stories about that process that I'd like to forget, but I would do it again, and with joy. I am NO saint, and I get frazzled like anyone, but they should be in their own beds and with family for as long as is possible, and I hope my loved ones would do the same. When I could no longer keep him safe 24/7, he went into hospice, but there only five days before he passed. This is a lovely story and I'm so glad you shared - going to my faves, my friend! :o)

(2) Didn't mean to turn a beautiful animal story into a personal thing, Danny, just saying that love is love, and all creatures crave affection. We hand out food and blankets and cots and clothes with great entusiasm, but where can one go to get a hug or conversation or care and affection? Yet THAT is what most people are really seeking and need most ... pets, too. We need to do better. Wonderful write and bless you for being a good heart, my friend. <3

(1) They are a precious-though-often-wasted resource, in my opinion, as wisdom is usually painful, and they've already paid the price for it. We can hardly hope to make a better future for our progeny without the consult of the past and that priceless wealth of knowledge and experience they carry. The best thing about that process is that SHARING wisdom and knowledge keeps us (and them) young and vital.

The elderly are usually an endless source of stories and wisdom. Yet, society in general has little use for them. I know you recently lost your dad and I am truly sorry for your loss. Wonderful to see you Greg. God bless:)

Called to be good stewards of God's Kingdom. Your kindness clearly underscores free Grace abides and reflects a profound understanding of His work in you. Well done, DT. :o)

I did not do it for a pat on the back. This is a story about taking care of the elderly who are, sadly, often forgotten and exploited. Nice to see you again Wayne:)

You did a nice thing. Sadly the things that happen to people and especially children is even more heart wrenching. While some may scratch their heads wondering where it's all leading the Bible foretold long ago that a generation would come that would fit the description found here - 2 Timothy 3:1-5. The good news is better times follow - Revelation 21:3,4

Yes Tommy we can only hope and pray we will be going to a far far better place. Even though I am old and cynical, I still want to believe that most people do have a heart otherwise we are all doomed.

Daniel, oh my gosh, your story of Georgie made me weep, how can any human be so cruel! I pray the old dog gets his forever home and they let you know, do you think they will do that? And you Daniel are a hero in my eyes. Yes, society seems to discard the elderly, almost like not seeing them, but I do not and there are many like me... sometimes our true family do not become our "family" we can make our own with friends, yes, this world is cruel. God Bless you _ Constance

Yes, the lady's name was Faith and she said she would keep in touch. No living thing deserves to be treated like that. I am just glad Georgie didn't die hungry and alone.

I have a huge lump in my throat DT, thanks for sharing, So glad Georgie was rescued by you and taken in by caring people. Made me think of mum in her care home she is almost blind and I still try and visit every day, yet there are those who never receive a visitor - except at Christmas when the place was heaving. Glad to see you back at soup:-) hugs Jan xx

What a wonderful daughter you are Jan:) Yes Georgie's story is a sad but relatable reality. It's nice to see you too.

Whoever dumped Georgie never loved him. Thank God you found him and had the heart to help him. The older I get, the more precious kindness becomes. And I agree with you concerning the stewardship. We all will give an account for everything. God Bless you Daniel.

Rob, old age has left me very cynical and distrusting. This is one sick world...and yes there will be a day of reckoning! Nice to see you:)

Daniel, I hope you get the love and care you showed Georgie. It is a cruel world sometimes out there but thank God for people like you. You enriched Georgie's life and your own by your act of kindness. Well done, mate, an example to us all.

Kindness is a gift that keeps on giving. It is our duty as humans to be good stewards to nature and to each other. In this me first society, a lot of times that gets overlooked and taken advantage of.

This hit me very hard as we had to put down our black and tan long haired dachshund in October. He was almost blind and couldn't hear well and suffering from heart failure. We miss him very much and think of him every day. He passed away in my wife's arms - the best companion anyone could ever have and he was ours. We adopted him when he was 8. This story really saddens me, thanks for being such a kind soul.

It is in a microcosm, life. Survival of the fittest. If ever you get to the point in your life when you think you need some help. It's do or die my friend. I felt morally obligated, Craig. I still have to look in the mirror to shave.
