Hello Everyone,

My name is Holly. I have been writing poetry since the 1990's. I wrote a few poems back then, and then took a break for 30 years or so, now I'm writing again. I only write rhyming poetry. I write when the mood strikes, or, when I want to express my opinion. My poetry usually has a Christian/Catholic theme. God and faith is very important in my life. I enjoy reading your comments and very much appreciate those of you who take the time to offer feedback.

Thanks Again,

Holly

I try to comment on other peoples poems when I read them. Since I only write simple rhyming poetry, I often will not leave comments on other styles simply because I am not familiar with it. So my question is this - Is anyone else seeing where 50-125+ people have read their poem and yet not one comment was left ? Whats up ?  Thanks   Holly

That is very strange when someone has tons of looks and yet no comments. I bet if those folks were commenting a lot to others, they would at least get some comments back. When I first came here, I read an commented to almost EVERYONE at the site!!! That way i finally got to know the people who were interested in establishing connections with me. It's my advice for all newbies. And reading other styles can't help but broaden your own knowledge.

Many of my poems which have been on poetrysoup for quite a long period of time have had quite a few hits and absolutely no comments, while others have had quite a number of hits and a few to many comments. I read a great number of poems on this site, but choose to comment usually only when I have something complimentary or positive to say -- choosing to remain silent (usually) about those I would only have negative things to say. Keep writing and posting.SD5

I usually find, if you don’t get comments within the first 48 hours, you’re probably not going to get any, as people only tend to comment on new poems - unless you enter your poem in a contest. I love it when I get comments on “old” poems though (not that old - I’ve only been on the site for six months lol!) I’m assuming many of the reads that come later in a poem’s life are from non-members who have come across the poem via google etc - but I’m not sure. Anyway, non-members can’t comment of course. Always nice to know you’ve been read at least!

Yes, Nina nailed it, (and Agnes) - the comments usually come early-on, with maybe a trickle later ... the exception would be poems that get selected for POTD or place in a contest later, then you're apt to get some more. You will also not get comments unless you GIVE them, and that is almost absolute, except for some of those who may "follow" you regularly. I have been way too busy to read and comment on many others' of late, and there are times like that for everyone, and as a result I've RECEIVED few. I have been blessed, and have very few poems that haven't received some sort of comment, but it has definitely increased as I have commented on others' work, become more visible, and made some good friends. Give it time - it will come! (I've been here about 20 months). :-) <3

Yes, most comments happen early, because people come across the poem either by reading "new poems" or by reading "poems of poets I follow". Older poems get visited when they are featured on PS, place in a contest, or when somebody discovered a poet they really like and goes back to read all of that poet's work. The "new poems" stream moves very fast, so it is hard to see poems that are older than 2 days.

Lack of foot traffic, views, and comments here at PS are easy to see. It's no anomaly. Even the good poets, here, are left out in the cold. How I see is that the well-knitted community, here, sits in correlation with the used sweaters on a Salvation Army shelf, not at Bloomingdale's or high shelf ... which is a shame. In other words, the poets here are hidden compared to other sites.

I think it's weird to read a poem and not leave some kind of comment, but to each his own. If you read my recent blog you'll see I mention this topic

Most people who read a poem don't leave a comment. I think the number of views is the number of times somebody clicked on the poem; they may or may not read it to the end, and may skim or read carefully. Some people never comment; some may not have had anything profound to say about the particular poem.

Dear Holly, those numbers are very misleading - someone more knowledgeable of the inner workings will explain to you but, in the interim, I can tell you that the poems were not "read" they just appeared on someone's screen that many times... I will be interested to see the "official" explanation myself. In the meantime, glad to meet you and it will be my pleasure to visit your poetry tonight. Best wishes to you!
